When I did my marathon transmission repair last summer, I replaced all the old rubber hose sections going from my manifold back to the modulator. It was the cloth covered vacuum hose. I replaced it with the same stuff. My transmission shifts smooth as silk up and down and backshift and upshift. What I also found when I tore my diff apart was excessive wear in the gears. When I replaced the entire trans with a rebuilt known good unit, my harshness was gone. Worn side gears were my cause. This can be found by putting the car in park and raising both wheels off the ground. the wheels back and forth and see what your working with as far as play.
