Default Electrical Problem

Hi Guys

Thank You for taking the time to look at my post. I discovered a connector that appears to be corroded and burnt. Can some tell me what this connector leads to.

Welcome to the group!


What car are you working on?


Recommendation:

Click on "User CP" in the header bar, and take a minute to add a signature line that includes the year of your car. With that, we can determine which wires are routed through your CE panel connector 'H'.

Also:

Working on these cars, especially on electrical stuff, is a game of blind-man's bluff if you don't have the wiring diagrams in the workshop manuals. Get in touch with Laura or Roger at 928srus.com for a CD set of the manuals if you don't have a set already.

Was fuze #13 missing when you opened up the CE panel? And was the plug (plug H) in question already unplugged or did you disconnect it? What isn't working on the car? This could be helpful.

If nothing is "not working", which would be unbelievable for any 928, then I'd guess that someone has monkeyfarted around with bypassing the fuel pump relay or something. But, again...more info would be beneficial.

adding some Deoxit 100 to the connector should fix them

Unfortunately, DeOxit won't cure waht appears to be bubbled/melted insulation on the black wires in the connector.

The car is early enough to have bullet fuses, just need to get the year to positively ID all the wires plugged in there.

You have to tell us the year (every time) - things are very different based on year

There appears to be a good amount of corrosion behind the panel, as well as in one of the red connector's terminals, so removing the panel would be my next step (after getting the wiring diagrams).

oops I missed the bubbling wire sheathing the pictures are too big.
Anyway you should disconnect the battery,
then drop the CE panel and inspect the rear of the panel for the same melted wires,
you will be looking for wires that have a matte sheen to the insulation,
these will indicate they got hot

also Note that the panel has been out before - labels on plugs, and the brown ground wires should route behind the panel - not in front. Early USA cars don't use fuse #13 ~1978-1982.

OK Thank you for your input I'm still new to the forum (delay response)

Unfortunately I think the previous owners messed around with the wiring.

So my car is a 1981 928 with bullet fuses and what started it all was my heater fan stopped working which I thought I would look into it at another time. The my head light stopped popping up. So that started the investigation, I saw the melted wire and quickly unplugged the battery. I took the connect out to have a closer look. I need to trace back the wire. I thought at least the fuse would pop but it didn't. The connect is all green too.

Thanks Alan and to everyone

I'll try to get more pictures from behind. From what I can see none of the wires from behind are burnt or melted which is odd to me. But my gut feeling is all the wire harness will need to be examined. Which means cut all the tape to see it.

Does anyone know what that h connect is for?

Yes your right Dr bob.

The car is a 1981. With bullet fuses but you would think the fuses would pop. All the other connectors look good. But my question is....is the wire really black or a different colour?....because all the way to the harness it has melted/deteriorated

Great advice..... I did take the panel off but I didn't look for a matte seen.....I'll get my ohm meter and check for continuity and find the wire associate to the melted one...thank you
