I suppose that built into my last post above, a set of these shims now consists of .025, .032, and .040. I have for some time been sending .025 rather than.020.

I don't send these shims out much but recently found that I was down to about 2 of them in the .025 thickness. So, I ordered a 2 by 4 foot sheet of .025 aluminum from my aircraft supplier and when it came a few days ago I set out to use up about half of it to make some more .025 shims for these sets. I have them complete now and need only to mark them each with the thickness. Go out and check your doors and let me know if I need to ship you any of these.

Nice report, Andrew. And, very interesting pictures. Sticking a shim to the hinge like that is a good idea and one I had not thought of. In fact I have never installed one of these shims. However, most guys are looking to raise the rear of a door and do not need to take the door completely off. I think that just removing the bolts from the top hinge should allow enough space to insert the shim(s) and then put the bolts back in.

Is that Oak Green ? Original paint? What are you repainting it to?

Edit..saw the link..color does look good.. I assume staying with oak green?

I wanted to lift the rear and move it forward a bit. It's easy with a door jack I just leave the wires and tubes hooked up. Yes this will be getting refinished in correct Oak Green. This car has some panels of original paint and a few other panels repainted, at different times, in different shades, with different orange peels, all in an attempted "match" to original Oak Green... another fine job by the "metallic panel painters union"

Bump. This is an older thread, but the cars are also that much older and I suspect that there is as much or more need for door lifting adjustment than ever before.

Please go check the fit of your doors, particularly the driver's door, and see if there is any dragging of it on the door sill and/or improper gaps around it particularly at the rear bottom. If so, you may need some hinge shims. They are still free for the asking, if you need them. I do not send for free, or at all, just to have just in case.

I just sent a set to Sweden to one of our Rennlist Members. He was very amazed that I would send these to him totally gratis. He said that he was not the kind of person that expected to receive sometning for nothing, or words to that effect, but when I pointed out to him that that was what he has been doing as a Rennlist User, he immediately got the pictue and became a full Member to Rennlist. Its interesting the way people sometimes think.

Nevertheless, I will send these Shims to any 928 owner in need for the asking. I will only resent it a little bit if you or they are not a full Member of this Forum.

Just as a kind of reminder or summary, since I'm sure not everyone is interested in reading this whole thread, I send these shims in a set of 3. They are different thicknesses as follows: .025 in, .032 ins and .040 in. They can be used singularly or in combination to lift the rear of the 928 door by 3.5 times the thickness of shim or shims used. The hinge spacing is about a foot and the distance from the hinges to the rear of the door is about 44 inches, so roughly 3.5 times for geometry purposes.

The hinges used singularly or in combination will give you the following:

.025
.032
.040
.057
.065
.072
.097.

The last combination will raise the rear of the door just under 3/8 inch or 8.5mm. If that is not enough or if you need both doors lifted let me know and I'll send you another set of shims.

George, I posted you one set of shims as described above. You should be able to lift your door with what I have sent. If you find that you need more let me know and I will send more. By the way - - I posted these to the exact address you provided, but I see that my postal receipt suggests that these are going to the UK of Great Britian or Northern Irelend. Who knows? If these do not show up in about 10 days let me know and I will try again.
