Default WTB: Driver/Passenger Windows

Hi All,

The driver and passenger door windows are really scratched up on my 1991 S4. Long vertical scratches - too deep to polish out - likely caused by rocks/debris caught in the outer seals. Does anyone have clean/scratch free used windows they'd be willing to sell? I'd buy one side or the other, doesn't have to be a pair.

I found some on ebay that are fairly inexpensive - does anyone know what model years are interchangeable?

Also, some are tinted and some are not. The ones on mine are not... was this a factory option?

Thanks,
Mike

I would recommend 928 International be your first call - they can answer your questions and supply the windows.

The windows will fit all years, the shape never changed. The tint did change over the years, bronze/brown and later (?) green tint. I am not aware of a clear glass version, but I suppose it is possible. My early '80 had bronze tint but 86.5 and 90GT had green tint to the glass.

Cheers!

Those scratches are from the degradation of the foam pads or rollers that keep the glass pressed into place as it closes. Replace those before you spend money on new glass and while in there lubricate the whole assembly.

Thank You Roger!

I'm Trying to get a handle on what I'll need to replace here - there is also an outer window seal (the rubber that hugs the outside glass as the window slides) that should keep dirt/debris from getting into the window system in general, correct? My outer seal is brittle and will need replacement (this is probably how rocks/debris got into the foam pads in the first place?).

I'm thinking I should maybe replace the outer window seals only, and just clean the foam pads or rollers... what do you guys think?

Roger - can you quote the L/R outer window seals as well?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
The originals are circa $200 each but I have aftermarket seals for $179.95 a pair.

I know its not cheap but I would replace the foam pads. However you can "preen" them of any bits of grit with a rubber bristled brush they use to use on "Hush Puppy" style shoes - probably before your time 8>). Also think about changing the guides while you are in there - need 4 at about $20 each.

Best,
Roger

Thanks for your help Roger. I'll likely be opening up the doors by the end of the week to see what the condition of all the parts are in and will place an order then. The door lock **** doesn't move so that's going to need attention as well.

Can someone post a photo and/or how-to of what the body frame door seals are supposed to look like for a 1991?

The seals on the door themselves are in pretty good shape (the car doesn't leak water at all), but there's a rubber/felt seal "jammed" into the crevice between the headliner panel and the frame - it looks out of place and is falling/popping out in several places. My guess is the PO stuffed it in there incorrectly or it may be the wrong seal...

What is the door seal (on the main body frame) assembly supposed to look like? Should I use rubber caulk here? Any advice would be great.

Thanks,
Mike
