Default Air con O rings

I found the leak in a/c system, Can I just unbolt it where it is and put a new O ring in without having to evacuate the system?

When you unbolt it it will self evacuate...Unbolt it slowly to bleed off any residual pressure.

Once you open the system to replace an o-ring, any refrigerant remaining will dissipate to the atmosphere. Legally, that stuff needs to be recovered rather than vented.

After the o-ring (just one??) is replaced, you'll need to evacuate the air and boil any moisture from the system before adding refrigerant.

The drier should be replaced if the system is exposed to air. Reality is that this is a time and moisture-based decision, so if your repair is quick and the system is evacuated right away, you probably aren't too worried about contaminating the drire too much.

**** Seldom is just one o-ring the problem, unless it was somehow damaged during installation. If you have original o-rings (any) in the system, the effort to recover-evacuate-recharge is the same for one as it is for all of them.

Yup, I now own a set of R12 and an R134 evacuation and refill stations. Not just the crappy HF vacuum pump.
