Default Magnetic carrier plate transaxle

It looks like I will have to remove and replace the magnetic carrier located in the transaxle. I need to know what is involved with task. Can I remove the right halfshaft while the transaxle is still in the car. With the transaxle still in the car, can the disk be removed. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated.

what year and is it auto or 5 speed?
Why do you need to do this?
Both Half shafts can be removed with the trans in the car,
though the left side may need to remove the pumpkin and the left resonator

Hey Stan,
The car is a 87 S4 auto. The reason is that I am not getting impulses from the magnetic disk. The sensor works when I pass a magnet by but will not pick up the magnets from the disk thru the cover. I did pull the cover years ago and inspected the disk, all magnets were in place. I cleaned the disk and installed the cover.
Do you miss Denver yet?

OK has the rear trans cover ever been replaced ? there were a few different versions
you may have the wrong cover or could the sensor be installed backwards?

Stan, This is the same cover that was on the car when the speedo worked. This car had a engine fire that originated at the power steering pump. The fire reached back as far as the cats. No damage at the transaxle.

Itoolio, The sensor is installed sensor side facing the cover plastic side to the rear.

If thats true then the system should not need any parts to operate

I just discovered with a new disk and sensor on the bench that passing the disk in front of the sensor their is no reading of the magnet. However, if I turn the sensor over with the plastic face facing the transaxle or maagnet, I get a reading. Therefore, this suggests that the sensor is installed backwards. I will reverse the sensor tomorrow and will let you know.

posting pictures of what your doing will assist others,
who may be able to help offer suggestions on the fix.
from what you posted try flipping the sensor over

At least you have a sensor.. one 928 I owned in the part turned up on my driveway after purchase with a pair of broken wires and no sensor in sight

The wiring for it goes up through a grommet just above the battery box, next to the ground point under the black plastic cover in the corner of the spare wheel well. You can test the sensor on the car by putting an ohm-meter on the sensor pins, and then slowly turning the diff by turning a rear wheel. When one of the (7? I forget how many) magnets lines up with the sensor you'll see the meter register the change.

This shows the sender at the extreme left with plastic face to the rear of the car. The reading ( if you are able to see it ) reads 1. The aluminum disk is the magnetic disk located in the transaxle.

Withe the sensor reversed I am now getting a reading on the volt meter. When installed in the car, I can now turn the rear wheel and get a beep at each magnet. I still need to test drive the car.

I would expect a voltage pulse, not an ohm reading?

A scope would be a cleaner visual w/ the rear spinning, I have to do some of this troubleshooting on the Gold 86.5, now after replacing both Rear and now the Front wiring harnesses, speedo still no joy.
Guess I start in the battery box

Thanks!

Dave

Ducman, When the sensor is in backwards it's impossible to get any reading from the rear wheel or from the battery corner or even at the central electrics or even at the speedo. When I reversed the sensor in my car I was able to get a signal from both T1 terminal and rotating the wheel on the car.

davec9, Their is no voltage connected with the bench test.

its a Reed switch. the magnets cause the contacts to close and open... thats it. if you flip the sensor to the wrong side, the switch is too far from magnets to work.
