my fuel gauge is reading a little over a 1/4 tank all the time.. i know the PO had removed the sending unit to suck out old gas and grime. the car was sitting for a long time.. now the fuel gauge isnt working.. any suggestions?

also noticed this wiring harness near the battery tray.. i realized someone used a crimper but i dont know what if its correct...

Red to brown, that's almost never good.

Here's the fuel level sender diagram for '81 - terminal G via a 0.75 mm2 violet/black wire to terminal T3 on the CE panel, terminal W via a 0.75 mm2 yellow/black wire to terminal T4 on the CE panel, and terminal 31 via a 0.75 mm2 brown (ground) wire to ground point 2.
