Default Dash, pod and console recovering

Mine are all vinyl, and...not good. The pod is cracked, the console has some gouges or something and on one side it appears the vinyl has warped up and away from the material underneath (but its quite hard...weird) and the dash has little cracks and looks like it might be a little warped as well. I probably need pics to describe it better. Right now I just have a "tech fabric" cover on it, you know...to keep the sun off

At some point I'd like to redo these in leather. I know the leather coverings are offered...but I'm guessing there's a lot more to it than simply getting them and gluing them on? Can you even put covers over damaged interior bits like this, or do you need an intact piece first?

Out of my league with this stuff...

Just send it to Classic nine (Robb Budd) and he does all the rest. Amazing transformation of existing dash/pod/consoles.

That's probably the best way to do it, but I don't know if my existing pieces are good enough to restore, and shipping is going to be a lot so I was wondering how doable it is to buy the pieces and cover it yourself? I did the carpet...of course that's a bit more forgiving than a leather dash, I would guess...

Jeff,

Rob will use yours as a core on future projects/sales and you will get one that is ready to go and complete. Rob will also sell you the cover and let you do it yourself but probably not the best option if you are not familiar with the recovering process.

This applies to most vendors selling rebuilt 928 parts. The cost of the rebuild of any said item is considered in the rebuild process and sales costs associated with the item. Intake manifolds powder coating, control arms, seat rebuilds, steering wheel re-covering. The sale price is the final product price. They are likely not fixing your part but selling you another part that belonged to someone else at some point.

The pricing can be found here.
Prices do not include core charges.

That's what I ended up doing. I bit the bullet and decided I'd get it done right. I'm not sure I'll see a 100% ROI but at least it'll look awesome.

how well do leather recovered pieces hold up in sunlight? The original ones from the factory certainly didn't and the OP is showing south Florida, where I think they have a little bright sun at times :-)

It's a good question. I really need to get my garage cleaned out so it's not sitting outside all day. I really REALLY should do that this weekend, in case Erika comes for a visit.

In general as good as the original but all leather will shrink when heated especially from sun light.
If you're going to park all day in the sun, IE drive the 928 to work and park it for 8 hrs. A sunscreen & treating the leather every few weeks will help. But eventually UV and heat will take its toll.

For a garage queen, driven only a few times a month and kept garaged, as long as the leather is kept clean and treated every few months the leather will last quite a while.

For a daily driver, I recommend vinyl or Alcantara or Alcantara/leather combination on the dash.

Leather treatment for the dash should contain a UV blocker.
One of the very few that have a UV Blacker can be found here.

The original leather interior pieces seem to have lasted anywhere from 10-20 years. Is that what you expect to see out of your recovered pieces?

Environmental factors play a major part.
If the leather is cared for, I'd expect a lot longer than that.
Some 30 year old+ cars have held up well.

Oh good! That makes me feel a lot better. Proper care is required and that makes perfect sense. Thanks RB.

Ive done my own covering, as I live in Australia. I would never do it if I could've sent the pieces away!
Its certainly a learning experience....

One point to consider is that when you replace the dash, then ALL of the rest of the trim will look different. A new leather dash will never match the vinyl.

You might get away with black it if your car has a black interior.

Ive used Classic 9 alcantarra pod & carpet, & Paul Champagne leather, I've also recovered the roof & hatch with black ultra suede. There is no original left!
Both vendors are brilliant!!
