Is it just me, or did anyone else's jaw drop! Putting an engine harness in, in only 5 hours no less, and in a parking lot? MrMerlin, were you a field surgeon in another life? Amazing!

Cool. Start a new thread with the road trip and we can keep up. Visit some 928ers along the way. Spread good cheer, and beg for parts and tools. heheee.
Reminds me of the time I flew to Roanoke VA and picked up a 50 year old single engine plane and took it back home. Whew, that was a trip and a half.

I'm in Saint John, NB only 60 miles from Fredericton and 1hr from the USA border at Calais, Maine. You are welcome to bring the 928 to my driveway / garage to work on. I have tools and enough beer to make the whole process less stressful

Now we could have a solution. I am racking my brain trying to figure this out
Options are
1) $3000 for a trucking company to haul it across Canada to CA door to door
2) Fly to Fredericton and get it to run and drive it back
3) Fly to Fredericton rent a U Haul and drag it Portland and have it picked up
( cost comes out the same as #1)
4) What tools and parts?
New coil
New ECU
5) What parts could I take off of my 16v that would help?

Its an 86.5? The parts I'd prep with are:
Bag of type 53 relays and fuses
rebuilt MAF (from somewhere who take cores back)
spare LH 2.2 (they do seem to be failing at this age)
CPS - Crank Sensor
Fuel Pump
Kempf Tool
Flare wrenches for fuel pump hard line (a spare used hard line from pump to filter might be a good idea too)
1/4" Socket set (all the above are small fittings, as are the belt covers)
Few spade connectors, crimp tool and electrical tape (for tmp. fix to CPS connector)
The above list would take care of the common failure points on an early 32V engine and let you check belt tension before driving off.

Followed the whole ordeal on BAT and glad you won, all the best. Just a word of advice from personal experience; if you are crossing into Canada with tools make sure you have lots of documentation on the reasons,copies of bill of sale/transactions for the purchase. Border guards are very suspicious of guys bringing tools in to work without permits etc.

I would treat the whole process of picking up the car as an adventure / vacation. It may be a simple fix or you might be stuck taking it across the border as a non runner. Either case you will make out all right if you take the time to relax a little, take in the sights and sample east cost living for a few days.

I spoke to Bill Ball and he feels that most likely its the injector connectors. However I just learned that they have been recently replaced and this was not the fix
I was thinking flying out the first week of October, which works best for my smarter half and myself and drive back during leaf peeping season and visiting relatives in Maine
Here is what i just learned.......

If you're going to fly up and get it working to drive it back, I could ship you the spare harness for a rebuild. You can get the parts to rebuild it from Bill or Roger.
Then you'd just need to beg/borrow/buy computers, ignition switch and a new CPS for good measure, and that really should address the different possible failure points. I think I saw a mention of a MAF sensor that shuts off the computer in the case of an upset, so maybe a new MAF as well. I don't think the other sensors (temp II, etc) prevent the car from starting if they fail.
I'm also planning on taking a run up to the border one of these evenings to see if I could trailer it across myself. Is dropping it in Houlton still an option for shipping, or would it have to go to Portland? Or have you decided to drive it back?

it could still be a harness issue.
NOTE given the miles on the car it would be smart to buy a good used harness from 928 INTL and install it.
NOTE inspect the connectors of the new harness without destroying the rubber covers,
you want to make sure none of them are shorted.
The MAF connector on the harness in the car could also contain shorted wires.
I thought the CPS was already replaced.
the only caveat is, if the CPS was not a Bosch part it could easily be a failed part as could any other non Bosch parts,
So make sure everything in the ignition/ injection system is Bosch
The computers dont usually give issues except for the ISV circuit ,
this gets damaged when the ISV shorts due to the brushes wearing into the armature and sticking it.
This can be tested by connecting the leads at the test port to turn off the ISV circuit if the circuit can not be turned off then the compuer is bad

I understand the part about the test port, but how do you determine whether it's disabling the idle circuit, especially if the ISV is frozen? Is there an easily accessible place to tap the signal to see if it's putting anything out?

The PO has an use harness purchased from Mark but not installed. My dilemma is do I fly to Canada with tools and try to sort this or just have it hauled to my garage in California and methodically go thru it? I am now leaning to just bite the bullet and have it trucked. Not very romantic but it works. I could spend a fortune at a hotel waiting for parts to arrive

If you have the time, you could go there with a few specific things to try and get it to drive, and failing that, resort to the truck. Worst case, you'd be out the trip, but that way you're still giving yourself a chance to have one of those cool cross-country stories adventure stories.

Imagine if you need to get several parts shipments working as you go. Shipments can be expedited, but that gets pricey with big and heavy boxes. It wouldn't take much to match the cash outlay of the truck charge, especially if you have to start throwing parts at it that might not be otherwise needed with some diagnostic work.
