Default Day 8

The 928 had a well deserved day off yesterday,

I did take a ride in another land based amphibian, although the open air motoring was appealing, and the view of the road ahead far better, it really didn't do a lot for me.

A nice tour take it if you get a chance

We're going to take the ferry to Nova Scotia today, thanks Foggy for the ferry idea. We'll then drive to Halifax for the Acadia PCA show and shine tomorrow.

Greg has generously offered me his driveway to try to get 8 days of vacation off of the car before the show.

I'm planning the route home now and going to try the East West drive across Maine Suggested by Brian, unfortunately this means I can't take Bob up on the Lobster dinner, maybe next year.

I'm also not going to have time to do the Cabot Trail, or Tidal Bore rafting, a couple of more reasons to do it again.

What a great run, my foot is starting to itch. Always a hard decision for me when deciding to take a road trip as to what to drive. My shark or my Goldwing. Love them both and each fulfills a different emotion. A two week jaunt would be a dream trip, just hard for many of us to get away for that long.
Your wife is a trooper. Mine could handle 7, maybe 10 days but a solo trip would really be the ticket. Like the old Mama's-Papa's tune....Go Where You Want To Go, Do What You Want To Do......
Now that would be a road trip...
Looking forward to seeing more pics! BTW how many miles did you cover?

Default Day 9

Technically the beginning of the return trip. Although there is still the show and shine tomorrow.

Neat thing happened on the ferry, as we were loading a family with a young boy, 6 or 7, goes by, he says Dad I really like this car, it is so cooooool, as he runs his hand over the front fender, his dad says yes and nods to us.

To answer the question on miles it's about 3,000 or so today. When I'm done this trip will represent roughly 10% of the total miles put onto the car.

I have to say I like traveling with the wife, stop at the odd fashion mall and she's happy, the limited available cargo area in the 928 is a bonus I get to drive, she only gets up tight when I'm well over the line, which is probably a good thing, so it works out well.

The car really gets the nods from bikers, they probably don't even look at the car, what they like is the sound. There always seems to be one riding behind when I hit the hills and twists.

Parked at the B&B roughly 24 hours without moving, a record for this trip.

Took the advice and booked the ferry.

Potential for disaster, 928 is way too wide for space available. We had to squeeze ourselves out, and got lucky with the offset on the van, if there is a next time, I'm going to ask to be on the deck with the trucks.

Default Day 10

The day started a little wrong, I needed a boost, the interior lights had been on for 16 hours or so.

With the help of the very friendly and helpful hotel staff I was on my way.

Went over to Greg Taylor's his post is earlier in the thread, he was very generous to offer his garage and supplies so that I could try to take 3,000 miles of bugs off of the car, and a couple of PEI beaches out of it, to make it somewhat presentable. Considering the effort, limited, the car showed very well.

I'm an engine guy and, for me, there were not enough motors on display, the GT, the Lambo, an older 911, and the S4, I'm declaring myself a homer on this and going with the S4, the Lambo was covered in carbon fiber and the GT was dominated by the supercharger, the 911 just wasn't big enough. As for engine compartment it would have to go to the GT, just beautiful.

The days winner was deservedly a newer Targa, not only a beautiful car but one that was being driven, as in around the US, started in New Orleans and was 10,000 miles into the trip. I loved the car, the owner said there was surprisingly a lot of space in it, that there was enough space for that kind of a trip surprises me. My wife and I had to change our packing for the 928, I don't know if we could change enough for the Targa.

Everyone at the show was wonderful and I'd strongly recommend that you drop by if you get a chance. And clearly they are a generous lot picking an out of town/ out of province/ out of country winner, although they did refuse to let him take the trophy home.

Pack up tomorrow and start the trip back, I'm looking forward going across Maine and Vermont.

Always always always make sure the interior lights are off as you walk away. I left the hatch open a little, it fired but then tick tick tick, everyone rushed around to find cables to get me going again.

Attended the Acadia PCA show and shine, had a great time.

A very picturesque setting.

Party was crashed by a Lambo and a Ford GT, must admit I liked the GT.

Being a motor man, I was a little disappointed that there were not more hoods/tails open, the Lambo, the Ford GT, an older 911 and our S4.

Folks, Lance's car showed very well in Halifax ... apparently he was too modest to give you a good shot of her in the sunshine on the waterfront (so here is one for you). Not only did it look good, it sounds great as well.

Thanks for stopping in Halifax, was great to add another 928 into the mix!

Greg

Default Day 10

Greg,

Truth is I didn't take any pictures of my car, meant to but was busy taking pictures of all of the other cars.

Thanks for the invite, thanks for the hospitality, thanks for the picture.

Lots to report.

The intermittent squeal from the blower was punctuated by a short really ugly squawk and all fan speeds except high were gone. I'll be searching options right after I finish this.

If you've been following you know I believe that the fuel economy is better when the car is driven hard. While in Canada my fuel consumption went up by 10%, less speed, easier driving, lots of cruise control, it was surprising. So surprising that I started to believe it was that we had inferior gas in Canada.

Today I drive from Halifax to the Maine border, 13.8 l/100, relatively flat cruise control all of the way, I'm too lazy to calculate lower numbers are better. Get onto highway 9 in Maine, same gas, lots of elevation change in very short order up to 12%, lots of speed changes, 2 lane passing, no cruise, a very fun drive fuel economy 12.7l/100. All I can figure is that the torque of the engine results in a situation where the car uses less extra fuel going up than it saves going down. If anyone has a better theory I'm open to suggestions.

Back roads of Maine are very nice and well worth the drive.

More research on the effects of elevation change tomorrow.

Good morning Halifax home today

Get off of the interstate and Maine is really beautiful, none of these pictures do it justice.

Impromptu show and shine at the B&B.

Dump a couple bottles of injector cleaner into each of the next few tanks of gas. The flow from the highway cruising might help the cleaner get some of the varnish cobwebs out of the fuel system. Oxy sensor is a 50k-life item that affects performance and fuel economy.

Loving the narrative and the pictures. Many of us are enjoying the vacation vicariously I suspect. I know I am. Thanks for sharing!

Default Day 11 &12

Day 11 was about a Paradigm shift, it would be the last opportunity for really enjoyable driving, the balance of the trip iis much flatter and straighter.

I have on this trip tried to find nice drives as part of my going from A to B, I was still driving from A to B, this trip was about the drive between A and B.

I avoided interstates when I could, took the smallest paved roads I could find, I started in Maine, and went through New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. I saw the grand canyon of Vermont as well as the mountain roads through the ski resorts.

It was a blast, but a bit longer on the road then intended, almost 11 hours, 3 more than the direct route, thus I was too tired to write last night.

Amazing roads, amazing lakes and stream, amazing hills and mountains, and really amazing skies.

This leg could have been improved in 2 ways, it should have been 2 or 3 days, and a few less socially responsible drivers governing the pace. Some very nice stretches with no passing allowed could have used one less car.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Count me as a fan !!

Dr. Bob, I did the O2 sensor with the rebuild, I'm on my third fuel injector cleaner tank, fuel economy has gone up on the flats, it hasn't changed in the ups and downs.

I dedicated the 11th day to a sign

Driving through a tunnel of trees

Things to see everywhere

Lots of elevation changes

Even the brief sections of the interstate were amazing.

A storm a brewing

After the storm

End of the day

Default More pictures

Just a few more.

Very few of the views actually become useable pictures.
1) We had no idea what we would see when and often didn't have the camera ready.
2) Even when the camera was ready, the combination of the speed of the car, angle of view, and the slowness of the camera results in a bunch of blurry pictures.
3) The 928 is just too low to get a camera angle over guard rails and even small vegetation.

I got out to take this picture

Default The End

It was a blast.

Best tank of fuel, all less than 75 mph easy traffic a lot without AC, 11.4 l/100 almost 21 mpg.

Worst tank 14.2 l/100 16.2 mpg, tooling around PEI after a suspected bad tank of gas.

No oil added.

Issues with the car:
1) Killed the battery once ( My fault).
2) Lost fan speed control, fan on high for the trip home was annoying.
3) Hatch latch was loose, first rattles then hard to close, tightened up both bolts and all was good.
4) Hard to start, bad tank of fuel, 5 tanks with fuel injector cleaner and all is well.
6) Worn tie rod end, last couple of days a vibration was noticeable at high speeds, much worse on surfaces grooved in direction of travel, and much much worse when wet, had to keep speed below 70.

So for something that is 27 years old, recently rebuilt after a fire and sitting a while, very impressive.

Pictures I should have taken:
1) The motor cyclist chasing us through mountains to listen to the car.
2) The car after we stopped at our parcel pick up, when you fold the back seats down you can get a lot in.

Just a wonderful car for 2 people to take a trip in, can't wait to do it again.

If you haven't done it, take the time and go out and do it, as long as you have your maintenance up to date the cars are up to the task.

I hope everyone enjoyed following.

Lance

Chicago was crystal clear, and lots of traffic

117, 913 finish total distance 8,798 km, 5,466 mies.

The car is on a slight incline, used next to no oil, actually about 6,200 miles on this and still in pretty good condition

Engine is still clean and no worse for wear

The trip, although probably not dead accurate on the Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York Leg

Great story, trip looks like it was fantastic, very envious!

And a great coincidence - last Saturday (Sept. 26th and before I saw your thread) my wife and I were going west on Portage Avenue around 12:30. Looked in my mirror and low and behold, I see a beautiful 928 in my rearview mirror. Said to my wife "There's a 928 behind us!". I slowed down, switched lanes, opened my window and let your better half pass us. Enjoyed the sound and the view - your car is beautiful!

Not sure if your wife will remember but if she came home complaining about a silver Volvo weaving around on the road, that was me.

Anyway, loved reading about your trip and seeing your car.

(And BTW, she wasn't speeding or drag racing! Just looked like she was enjoying her drive.)

erwalker,

She would never complain about anyone in a Volvo, they still make up the bulk of the fleet. She does say there are more cars zipping around when she is in the 928.

She does enjoy her ride. Thanks for the compliments.

Hopefully we'll see you around, if it's me honk and I'll pull it over, probably won't work with the wife, she says she gets a lot more strange men talking to her since she began driving the 928.

Before that there was only one
