Default Urgent: 928 motorsport fan quit, identify this wire

:::Resolved:::: see post #9

hey everyone!

I have a huge issue and need your help. Car is an '84.

The 928 Motorsports fan that replaced my mech engine driven fan quit. I found the issue and need to find why the relay power when ignition is on gets no juice.

Below is the wire that when the ignition is on, supplies power to the relay. I have checked fuses under the floor panel but without knowing what that taped wire also powers I'm stuck

Not sure it makes any difference, but what year S4+ car is yours?

Sorry, fixed first post as well. My car is an '84.

That wire supplies power when the ignition is on. It's red with a white stripe, coming out of the little distribution box thing just above the jump post.

Without that power the relay is open, as if the ignition is off. When the ignition is on it had 12 volts and kept the relay closed so when the thermal switch activates the fan comes on.

No there is no power that wire when the ignition is on. When I first installed it months ago it did. now that wire is dead. I tested with my VOM and I did test the relay before using testing the wire for power and the relay works with 12v from another source.

Below is a better picture of where that wire goes. The block is actually a plug. Red with white strip in on the bottom half, red with white out on the top half.

I can't figure out what pin it is but maybe this will help.

Holy crap, there are no wire colors listed on the '84 wiring diagrams. How more useless could they be?

On the '85 diagram (which may be way different), there's a red/white stripe that connects to pin 7 of the 14 pin connector that runs to the aux air valve- check continuity on that and see if that's the wire?

OK so it is pin 7 for sure! Continuity is good.

Is there a fuse for that aux air valve circuit?

That 14 pin engine harness plug wasn't really all that nasty but using contact cleaner did the trick.

The 84' rescue is running cool as a cucumber, well a cucumber under the hoot of a 928 at least.

Thanks for the help on this one!

On the '85 WD it shows it running through fuse 42, then out through pin Q14 from the CE panel . The problem with that is that '84's only have 34 fuses....

Been looking at the '84 diagram and the aux air valve is also connected to pin 7 on the 14 pin connector, then runs to Q1 at the CE panel, but I don't understand the conventions on the '84 WD to follow it from there.

Looks like you have it cured, though!

so the fan did not fail? It was a corroded contact at the splice?
