Notice I didn't blame you, just asked a question.

Because you're concerned about the car being totaled: "I'm worried that even though the damage appears small, the car might be totalled...."

So I'm trying to give you a way to alleviate your worry. But - I won't make that mistake again.

Don't be so sensitive. The tone of my posts is always friendly and I did thank you for your reply. I know there's a tendency for some people to skim read the original post before replying, I thought perhaps you missed the part where I described what happened.

You don't know me. I'm the furthest thing from sensitive humanly possible. I missed the part where you thanked ME. I did see the part where you got defensive when I suggested you turn a few wrenches and save the car from being declared salvage.

Last suggestion. Sell the car, and buy a Pontiac Solstice.

Every thread has it's ZEEK.
NO reason to attack the OP doc.
He only stated that the accident was not his fault, and he wants his car fixed, he does not feel obligated to do the repair himself.

What year is your 928 (I didn't see that mentioned anywhere)?
That will no doubt have some effect on the ultimate answer to your question.
From the headlight, I see it's no newer than 86, but beyond that, not sure...

Judging from the picture, that damage "shouldn't" total your car.
Your car is still way too nice, properly functional, and totally usable.
(I would argue that amount of damage should never total ANY car).
But as we know, with a 928, odd things can happen with the numbers.

Work with them (whatever it takes) to not allow them to declare it a total loss.
When one "buys back their car", that usually comes with a salvage title.
Do all that you can to negotiate a settlement that avoids that stigma.

Personally, I'd accept as much money as they will give, and then fix it myself.

Thanks for your reply Mark R. It's a 1983 car.

Indeed. It would be a great shame. I've invested a lot into making that car something to be proud of and the a/c works of all things. I want to avoid the salvage title at all costs.

I'm hearing that a lot. I think that's the avenue I'm going to pursue with the insurers. Speaking to them on Monday.

Get a bumper cover and fender from 928Intl. Get them painted and change out the damaged parts. It's just parts swapping, not like taking the front of the engine apart to do the WP/TB/Cam Gears, tension-er ETC.ETC. It is a 2 person job for a weekend after the parts are painted. "Bolt off-Bolt on, Grasshopper."

If your deductible is say, $1000, you can do this at about that price, which would make the claim useless, other than triggering an 'insurance event' for which they wont give you a cent.

At that point, negotiate with the other guy "If we can work this out, it wont be a reported insurance event for you".

But that's just me..as a driver and not an owner..no matter HOW it's fixed, it's still been hit and takes a "hit" to a future "owner" type looking for the white glove kinda car.

New cover, new piping, new fender, $400 in paint after you do the prep work...

There is no reason why this car should total. The only explanation to offer for why it would is foolishness. Both of these panels are repairable from what I can see. I would advocate that they be repaired. Where the damage is located is favorable from a refinish perspective. This is a huge savings to you. With replacement parts, you'll need to refinish the entire front end and driver door so that a color match can be achieved. If the parts are repaired, the refinish effort can easily be contained within the affected panels without compromise to color match. The repair should last well beyond the life of the vehicle.
