Tail Warning Light Illuminated – was intermittent, now on all the time

Like many Rennlisters and especially 928ers I had an intermittent tail warning light, after going to running lights or to headlights up & illuminated.
I’d suspected that there was a weak connection in one of the tail light pods as one bulb socket was missing and the connection was to the wires only (held on by a big blob of tape.) I replaced the driver side light pod (where the missing bulb/tape blob setup was formerly located.) I also cleaned all of the bulb bases, the connectors, all of the grounds, etc etc while in there. After the repair, all of the lights illuminate properly when either running lights or headlights are on. But… the tail warning light is now on whenever lights are on. The warning light illuminates about 7 or 8 seconds after selecting lights on.
I’ve searched the threads, bought and installed brand-new bulbs, and all the rest. The only thing I can think of is, wrong bulb in one of the sockets but this just seems unlikely.
Any ideas?

You do need to make sure bulbs are correct for each socket and matched side to side. Also remember to check your side marker lights as the taillight warning will illuminate if one of these is out as well.

Front and rear side markers are illuminated. I *think* but don't know 100% for sure that the proper bulbs are in the sockets. Is there a list of the bulb positions and the proper bulb for each position here on R/L? I looked and looked but could not find one. Will the repair manual (which I have on CD but can't exactly find right now) have the proper bulbs listed?
As always, thanks!

I was getting the warning light on my 84 and it was the passenger side (right) rear marker light. Even though it was lit at first, while checking, there was enough corrosion to cause resistance to set off the warning system.
Yes, it would have been nice if it were the opposite side...where access is easier...but no...it had to be the one where the fuel tank inhibits access to the rear wing-nut hold-down fastener. There is a wheel-well cover on the left side that keeps the dirt out, but the right side is wide open to the elements.
Just cleaned up the sockets, replaced bulb...and all was well again.
Good luck,
Brian.

I had similar problems in my 86.5 at least twice. The first time I solved the issue by cleaning the multi-pin connector behind the quarter trim panel and the second time by replacing my bulb control unit after going through the list of solutions described above.
If all your lights are working correctly and you have verified that they are, you can exercise the option of making the warning evaporate by bypassing the bulb control module.
A thread on how to do so is here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...or-bypass.html
I have a known good bulb control module in my parts bin if I ever want to become pure again and a bypassed bulb control module installed in my car to preserve my sanity.
