Default Cosmetic surgery for wheel liners

I prefer working on my car to cleaning, but when I prepare her for shows I'm always disappointed by how bad the rear wheel liners look. They're original (MY91 on had the full rear liners) and all that pounding from stuff thrown up from the road gave them a scarred, greyish appearance.

Today I removed the rear offside liner, cleaned it (not using hose as there's lots of foam attached to rear), and then gave it two coats of black bumper paint.

Really improves the look. Where the original was smooth there's a nice satin black appearance, and where it's pitted/scarred the new paint mostly covers it up. Really pleased so will pull the other side and repeat.

Photo shows the "after" looking up into the wheel well. I won't post "before" as it looks so nasty!

From retouching photographs, I know that the trick in difficult situations is to just make the bad thing less noticeable. That shifts attention elsewhere, but if that's a bad thing, you have to fix that, too, and so on.

Don't worry I don't intend to go down slippery slope of OCD detailing!

But it's surprising how far wheels and tyres can lift a car. My club in UK (Independent Porsche Enthusiasts) invited me to display the car on their stand at the UK's biggest classics event last year. I displayed same car in 2009 so treated her this time to alloy refurb and new centre caps - looked nice with a wipe of tyre black! I think you're correct about attention shifting elsewhere as with wheels looking ok the wheel wells stood out as very tired looking. I intend to stop after refurbing the other liners so someone stop me if I go any further!

Yeah...I'm planning to just repaint the front of my car.
