Default Effect of Oil Cooler Function on Engine Temperatures

As some of you already know, I've been trying to figure out why my car, as well as other, mostly later model cars, have been running at higher temperatures.
After reading the post on oil coolers in the later cars I'm wondering whether a malfunctioning oil cooler would cause the engine coolant to be hotter than normal.
I understand that there's a thermostatically controlled system that diverts oil to the cooler with a pressure override.
Where's the thermostat? Where's the section in the manual that describes the function of the cooler?

ErnestSw - The thermostat parts are highlighted here (they appear to be the same for all years):

They are located in the bump-out that the cooler hoses connect to with the oil pressure sensor underneath.

Section 17 of the manual describes the disassembly of the oil circuit, but has no real information that I could find.

Don't the GTS's have an external (air/oil) oil cooler?

Porken,
The 89s and up have oil coolers separate from the radiator. Where did you get the diagram from?

From my el-cheapo PDF manual set, actually in the parts listings for Lubrication.

BTW - There is no part number listed for the thermostat in my scan; I'm hoping that someone with a proper PET can supply it.

There is a more descriptive blowup on page 17-4...

The Oil system thermostat appears to be called a "regulator" in the manual. The part no. is 928 107 172 01 (for the 91). Now, the question remains, what would the effect on coolant temperature be if that regulator fails to divert the oil through the oil cooler?

According to Pelican Parts the part number is now 92810717202, and appears to be available from Porsche for ~$30, cool.

ErnestSw - have you felt the oil cooler hoses for heat?

No I haven't. I'll probably replace the two springs as well.

Hi,
Ernest, I did ask you to post the temperatures in out to the cooler some time ago but you did not reply. I also enquired as to the oil brand, and viscosity you use

The oil cooler is certainly an integral part of the 928's engine cooling system
The oil cooler thermostat opens at 87C and is probably fully open around 95C

Regards

That because the external cooler started in 1990.

Ernest,
The recent local DFW news story about the guy whose life-size Dale Earnhardt nascar barbeque smoker was stolen made me think of you. Maybe you should make the most of your situation. You could install one of those NASA-style aluminum foil underhood insulation blankets and cook briskets and hotlinks on our next trip to Texas Motorsports Ranch.
[I hope you have a good sense of humor...you live too close to be an enemy.]
One of these days you're going to solve that pesky heating issue and we'll celebrate over a beer (or three). I'm buying.

Dave,
We can call Motorsport Ranch our "Manifold Destination"

Doug, I remember reading your question, but don't remember if Ernest ever did answer your question?

Well Ernerst?

I never did check the oil cooler.
Mea culpa.
