Default small leak between differential and intermediate plate '90 S4 Auto

Was under my 1990 S4 Auto at the weekend checking the auto transmission oil level and noticed a small wet patch between what looks like the differential and intermediate plate. The fluid is yellow.

As far as I can make out from the PET, what I am looking at between the diff and int. plate is an adjusting shim and not a gasket, which would mean I probably have a problem with the O ring 999 701 743 40 ?? Has anyone had a similar leak and can confirm.

Dan

I had exactly the same leak and your analysis sounds right - this means that you are hosed and have to take the trans out to fix it.

If you check carefully, you will find a small hole at the left side about half way up the intermediate plate from which the oil should originate.

(Edit: the hole is for any oil that leaks past the sealing of the trans to drain out rather than enter the diff, and vice versa)

(Edit #2: from the pic it looks as if there is also some green fluid leaking from the oil pan gasket? What kind of ATF is in there? )

The O-ring you quoted and the seal rings (999 113 307 40) are cheap but if the metal center ring (960 302 403 03) shows any kind of wear, prepare to shell out about 200 of Europe's finest!

Hi Kurt,

Thats a job the coming winter then ... Already looking forward to the next challenge.

The ATF fluid is the regular red stuff and in good condition. The green gel i believe was put on the pan gasket when I had a new pan and gasket fitted by Reibenspiess in Garching in 2011. I think I took the car to him as the autobox was leaking...cannot remember exactly but he found a cracked flex plate which was the cause of vibration. This was fixed also then, thrust bearing play was checked and everything was re-alligned.

You will have to drive my car when we meet up ... Interested to see if there is a big difference in how your '90 drives and mine.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Dan

Hi Dan,

if the leak is not too bad, you can defer fixing it until next winter but I would keep checking the diff oil on a regular basis.

What do you think of Reibenspies? I have no first hand experience but I know that some 911 people frequent his shop and are quite satisfied. That doesn't mean he knows a lot about our cars, though.

I hope you get your registration process done soon and we find a gap between the rain showers

Reibenspies made a good impression on me - personally as well as having a good workshop and knowledge of the car, and he is geographically close to me. I would use him again for sure if I had to - but these days try to do all my 928 work myself.

My car had a full respray in 2008 by sportwagen-wehnert in Munich north. I did not find him so "sympathisch" - and there was certainly a lack of attention to detail which I would have liked. But then I am a bit of a perfectionist.
