Default Aftermarket tach install

I screwed up my timing replacing the green wire. I've never timed a vehicle before but it seems pretty straight forward. only problem is my tach doesn't work (speedo is the only guage that does) and it needs to be at 3000 rpms for timing. I haven't dove into the guages yet and I don't really feel like getting into that yet.. I have other more pressing issues.

anyway, I just want to hook up this aftermarket tach up temporarily so I can get it timed properly, where is the tach signal sender located?

What year is your car? I have an 81 & just did this. I used the "dwell / tach" functionality on my automotive multi-meter - it connected directly to coil and to ground.

For the early models, the WSM page 28-4 states that the automotive tach / dwell meter can be connected to either coil terminal.

For my 81, I disconnected and plugged the two vacuum lines. I noticed that 3000RPM is the limit on centrifugal advance & so you don't have to be precise about the RPMs - just be beyond the centrifugal limits.

Some timing lights have a tach built into them. Consider getting one of these.

The sticker on the car that says that the ignition system can kill you put the fear of zap in me - I was probably over cautious near it.

Please note your year & follow the appropriate WSM instructions.

I have a 79 and I figured the tach signal out.
is there a wire under the hood that I could use for the power? it needs power only when the ignition is on. the instructions say to run it to the fuse panel but the wires aren't long enough and I just want to hook it up temporarily. would the other side of the coil work?
