New to me 928
Hey guys, some of you saw my advice thread but I wanted to introduce myself properly!
My name's Chris and I come from the 4 cylinder transaxle side of things. I was looking for another 951 and this 1985 928s came up for sale about 10 minutes from me. Checked it out and i think i got a great deal on what seems like a strong car. Took it for a test drive and loved the power this thing has. Im sorry i hadnt test driven a 928 sooner!
Needs a few things here and there but I look forward to the journey. Hasnt had a timing belt in 12 years so i had it towed to the house. For the moment im debating on doing it myself for the first time or sending it off to a local 928 specialist. Hes a great guy but a stickler for oem. It seems like the common knowledge on here is to use the enthusiast's choice components like the porkensioner etc. This mechanic seems averse to trying new stuff which i suppose i understand. This has been discussed a 1000 and 1 times but Im wondering if there is a good tech session somewhere that i can follow to ease my fears? It would be nice to just drop it off and get it back all done but Im kind of looking forward to the process and really learning the car. I did the same with my other Porsches and really enjoyed getting to know the cars so well.
Look forward to getting to know you guys! Im sure some of you make it to Asheville/Tail of the dragon so look forward to meeting some of you as well!

i was a little underwhelmed at the extensive options but what can ya do?
Also is there a good vin/registry person on here? Might be kind of cool to learn more about the car.

Chris,
Congratulations. Stick shift too which are hard to find.
Every time I drive again my 968 powered 944 after having driven the 928GTS (in Germany), I am wondering what’s wrong with the car (the 944)!
As Tom Cruise said in "Risky Business" in regard to the Porsche 928, "There is no substitute". (However maintenance can be a bit pricey even for someone already used to Porsche prices.)

Thanks Sean! After driving this one, its hard to believe ive waited this long.
Thanks! Not far from me at all. Don't have anything going on that can't be changed. With the ancient t belt id be rockin the audi though.
Thanks Brian!
Markus, I completely forgot you had a 928! I guess I won't be seeing you in T-ville anytime soon. We were down there about a week ago. Way too hot!
Thanks a bunch Dave! I figured there would be codes somewhere at least for the radio etc! And thanks for cross threading!

The options sticker, in this case, is about as useful as a one legged man in an **** kicking competition ...

Nice choice, 85 /86 are the best of the OB's !!!
As far as the Tensioner is concerned, there are two opposing poles here, just like N & S on a magnet
IMO toss that old tech and use modern belt management, both will still require regular inspection (don't wait for an idiot light), the newer one (Audi) is much less involved to keep up.

Nice Chris. I do think you should cross the hills there and come to SITM. Don't worry about the Audi...I have yet to drive my 928....they let us have a corner of shame to park in, so it's all good. I'll save you a spot next to the white truck.
I did bring mine once tho'

quick update, car is running well after a few t belt bearings, WP, TB, new acc. belts, a new windshield, and just ordered some shocks all the way around, along with plugs, cap, wires, etc. Hatch wouldnt close so ordered the hatch receiver from Roger and now it works perfectly. that was a satisfying 40 bucks.

ok installed the shocks, that was fun. satisfying to drive without any clunks. also doing the intake R and R right now. painting the manifold etc. found a bad CPS wire, millions of vacuum leaks, wiring that was shredded and some poor looking fuel hoses. all of that is sorted, just waiting on the manifold paint to dry.
Also sent my gauge pod off to Palo Alto speedo. Had a bad oil pressure gauge but otherwise in good shape. resoldered all the connections so should be as good as new. Windshield is replaced and looks great as well. Ill get some pics up when the intake is all put back together.

With the documentation from Dwayne's garage, 416 pages of it, I was able to pull it off, of course had some guidance from Bertrand Daoust, great friend, but all in all I had to tackle the though part myself with great success.
I was very afraid of doing it at first, but boy am I glad I did it myself. If you want a job well done who best to do it but yourself !
I also did change the tensioner for the porkensionner since out of site out of mind (peace of mind).
And of course with the assistance you will get from these fellow Rennlisters is phenomenal. There are some moments when I had to revert to this forum for help and they came through time after time. At one point when I installed the porkensionner I had reversed the bolts and someone noticed that just by the pic, amazed !
The key here is take your time and tag EVERYTHING and take as many pictures as you can for when you put everything back together.
Anyway good luck in your venture.
