Gear shift springs..how to compress
Does anyone know the easiest way to compress the 2 springs that go on the gear shift lever..Im baffled on how to get anything in there to squeeze the gear shift lever with the shift rod pins and then get the other white bushing on and the clip..HELP !!! 79 ROW car, and also, does my car even use these springs..was it a 78 only thing? Im learning about that 78 only thing..

The springs are a 78-95 thing on all stock 5-speeds. Typically people will get some fine copper wire and compress the springs with the wire, install the slide clip, then cut the wire with some dykes to remove them.
Most aftermarket short shift levers have a longer bore that replaces the need for the springs, if that's an attraction.
Do you have the slide-lock clips (called 'sl-lock' in PET) to fit over the ends of the shift lever rods? As best I can tell, they were used in 78-84, and then they moved to e-clips. I think the sl-locks would be easier to get into place than the e-clips, which like to go flying off while using your third hand to hold everything in place.
The slide lock clips look like this:

Thank you so much..I just found a post saying exactly that...didn't think to put them in a vice first and compress them and tie with a wire and then slide the shifter in...thanks.. I built a custom short shift with the stock 928 lever and then ground the top to match the 944 lever so I could use a nicer custom 944 gear shift ..it was a rare "rosewood" shifter from a car that had the rosewood interior and then striped it and painter it piano black..and then found a vintage shift topper and glued it on

Ive been restoring this 79 euro for 6 months now and haven't driven it yet..and my first 928, so I am not sure exactly what kind of support they give when shifting..I am so stoked about getting to drive for the first time next month..
