Hi,

Ok. New user here. For some reason, my tagline is not showing that it's a 1979 my.

It's listed in my manual as the Safety relay. Part # 928.615.116

In the wiring diagram for 1979 US cars, the headlight safety relay sits in position IV, while the "headlight control relay" sits in position XVI. The safety relay coil feeds from the X bus, which is supplied when the key is in engine run position, off when key is in start position. Look like it turns the headlights of when the engine isn't running.

Dr. Bob,

I was assuming the safety was based on the ignition circuit.

But, in both my Owners Manual and the best CD layout I can find, they both concur that the power is in the IV socket, and the safety is in the XVI socket.

From the bus description, it also sounds like it turns the headlights off when starting. That's what I remember it doing.

Unfortunately, I'm 8,000 miles from the car right now, so I can't check it out.

I wanted to sort these things to order some backup relays for when I next get to visit the states. I'm planning on driving the car from Wash DC back to the Olympic Peninsula in WA. I do lots of night driving, and don't really like driving without lights.

Cheers
