I always have problems with the word "investment" used in connection with cars they are expenses generally speaking more liabilities than assets. That whole game is fickle and always changing as to what is hot and what it not.
The $100,000 or so 1969 Camero Z28 of 3 or 4 years ago might get you $50,000 today !!
But I guess 25 years as a stock broker, financial planner, registered investment advisor and bank trust officer has something to do with how I define investment..

I must confess, I was being a bit facetious with the term "investor".

Kind of like buying a 150 year old house and being surprised that it is a money pit.

I thought that was the case and in a pure sense the reward of enjoying owning and driving a 928 is the "return" ....

A 2K 928 is a good parts car, if you already have 11K invested in your 5K 928.

True enough, but the 928 is a very different car from just about any other Porsche. If you aren't familiar with it's peculiarities, there's a variety of things you need to know.

The "old & dead" links have been cleaned up very nicely (my mistake on that), unfortunately a lot of very valuable info is now gone. But there's still a lot left.

Some of it's been covered in other posts. Timing belt/water pump, electrical shenanigans, vacuum issues and a few others.

What I said before still goes - unless you are looking for a long, involved, and expensive project, unless you know what you are looking for and looking at, stay away from the "cheap" 928s.

Hacker (the moderator) just got a "project" this week. It's an OB (early car) Red w/Tan inside. Nice paint, no sunroof, lots and lots of mechanical issues. He knows what he's getting into, this will be his 3rd. He has a lot of work and expenses ahead of him.

If you aren't a buyer, and it's in N TX, can you pass on the seller info please? Some others here would prolly be interested at that price.

N TX is kind of a hot-bed of 928 activity. I would say a $2k late 86 would be something that I or Roger would grab up pretty fast. I loved my 86 with auto. It was a fine driver car.

Very few 928s are bought for their investment value. The words: 'my Porsche is in the shop getting worked on' does not bode well for 928 ownership. We are far more DIY than the 996 folks.

I just recently bought a 928 very similar to what your describing for $1740. I have a few 911s, missed out on a cherry 40k mile s4, so decided to go the other route and buy the cheapest running 928 I could find lol. Mine is an 85 with the 32v and auto trans. It's showing 165k miles, but of course the odometer is broken and has been for years. It made it 45 miles home, so I felt like that was a major milestone in itself. Mine also has a trashed interior, but I bought a full set of seats for $500, the carpet cleaned up nice with a lot of cleaning and some dye. I need to replace the steering intermediate shaft, do the timing belt job, the vacuum lines and tune up and we'll see how long it lasts me as a driver.
