is this damage that bad?
I looked at a car recently. Is this a total loss? Bumper and metal bumper behind are toast. Fenders have small tears. Light bar damaged and the lights are under fenders that it doesn't allow lights to raise. I'm assuming the impact pulled the fenders in.

It depends.
"Total Loss" is an insurance decision.
Based upon the answer to the question: "Will it cost more to repair the damage than the car is worth?" (Usually a percentage of value)
If you look in the "Coca-Cola" car thread, you will see that front frame damage is repairable, but it takes skill and knowledge.
It wouldn't surprise me too much that the damage isn't all that bad, but will cost a fair amount to fix right.
Is it a salvage car? Or is it just for sale and you are looking for opinions on the damage?

Have a body man measure the front suspension points. He'll know how. That will determine the real cost of repairs. If the front susp points are off, the cost to get them back in line is pretty high. My bet is it's a total for insurance purposes unless it's some special chassis with high value.
A few hours on the chassis machine will get it back straight underneath, then you need a good front clip to steal stuff from. Good front clip call Mark out at 928 Intl and ask what he's got laying around.

Car for sale. 1987 with under 50k mileage. So probably a lil more rare and its also a 5 speed. Definitely has maintenance issues as well. Sunroof guide broken, hatch shocks shot, crack in pod. Missing clock. Paint is prob a 6 out of 10 on the rest of car. I was looking to buy it and fix it up. Only problem is that its quite a distance from me, over 3 hours away. Battery was dead during inspection, and it would turn, but not start. I was just getting everyones opinion on the repairability.

If it were a US spec 81 automatic with 150k miles.....not so much.
Friend of mine went to Tampa and back (starting in Green Bay, non stop except for gas) to pick up a 928.
Gas is cheap again, makes it that much easier to justify

Too far away to have suspension damage. You'll need a front clip minus the suspension to put this car back together. In the collision repair world, the Coca Cola car was a minor fix and this one is too.

It's minor if the chassis front isn't tweaked. Even a small amount of time on the frame machine takes a ton of setup and prep to put it straight again.
Have it measured and know what you know before going down this road. You're into a full repaint already to get it to match so the ext is a known quantity. If you want an 87, and a 5 speed, and you can get this for a few thou, it might be a fine starting point. If the guy wants more than ~$2500, you really have to think it over. interior needs doing, engine won't start, unknown clutch, trans, brakes, it's gonna take some coin either way. but at the end of it all you would have a well known deal.

in my opinion this would be a parts car vs a repair, 5k minimum on the frame work and parts, 3k on deferred maintenance., 2k would be a high price for the car as is.
