Default 84 dash heater control

When the bottom slider is in any location...besides defrost...the fan doesn't work. When the bottom slid is moved all the way right, defrost, it only works on high...and I have no control over its speed with the fan switch.

So, the only time the fan comes on is when in defrost mode. Moving the upper temp slid makes no difference in performance.

Also, a/c doesn't work...if that makes an difference.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Brian.

Well sure sounds like the resistor pack for the fan control is kaput. AC is unrelated (most likely). The defrost setting bypasses the resistor pack and will ONLY work at full fan speed.

Thank you Andrew.

I'm assuming the resistor for the fan is inside the heat control module. If so...I can see why it would go bad. I would only assume heat build up would be problematic, since there wouldn't be any airflow over the resistor while in use.

I need to get some manuals for this thing.

Actually, no. The resistor pack is accessed from under the cowl by the wipers. It's not too bad. I''m sure someone here has done a writeup.

No - the blower always works on speed 4 and bypasses the blower resistor pack - it will work like this with the resistor pack fully removed.

This is likely an issue with the blower relay, try a new one (horn) and/or try a fused jumper in place of 30/87.

Could also be an issue with the blower switch connections unplugged, or a faulty head unit - but that seems fairly unlikely. AC may be related depending on this cause.

After removing the passengers carpet and floor panel for the first time ever...I had a looksee at the CE panel. Very clean and orderly, looks as though it had never been viewed before by human eyes since installation. Grounds above the unit were tight and sparkling, too.

Anyhow, pulled relay XXI and replaced it...and now the fan makes noise in every position/speed. Whooo hooo!

On a side note...I didn't have any paint lid remover tools, like are recommended here by some for removing relays. So, I improvised some. I could pull the relay out only a 1/8 inch or so...and no more. Looked around the garage for a while scratching my head, while thinking about bending an old screwdriver to fit my needs...then l came across a roll of weed-wipe line. Cut off about a foot, slipped it beneath the relay about mid-section and looped it back around so both ends were between my fingers and pulled the relay out with ease. Kind of nice, because it is plastic line and very strong...but non-conductive. Left the weed-wipe line inside the CE panel compartment for future needs. But hopefully...it will be another thirty one years before it gets opened again.

Thanks guys, for pointing me in the right direction.

.. you did disconnect the battery first right?...

If not you got lucky - don't ever do it that way again... please...

Many (most?) of the relay supplies are not fused - poking the panel under the relays with a bit of metal is therefore very risky...

Alan,

I'm going to have too plead the fifth here...

But, technically...I'm holding you responible...since you didn't mention it beforehand...lol.

Anyhow..."All's well that ends well".

Kind of even getting excited about the thought of having a selection for heat distribution. Yes, even though it is May 1st...we still need some warm air in the cabin to keep from freezing to death in the morning hours. My feet will surely enjoy the chance at feeling some on the way to work today.

Thanks again...and I promise to disconnect the battery next time...maybe.

Brian.
