Yeah and its easy more fun than nitrogen! I think I'll try nitrous oxide. Now that would be fun! Heck, I know how about helinitroxide - I just made that up on case you were wondering. Why not mix helium and nitrous? Funny voice and funny feeling. Oh yeah, helium will displace the oxygen

The electronics don't seem to work all that great on 134a, and your right, they seem to suck on cars....I always use r22 for my trace, and I have good results.

Pressure and soap bubbles method is still my primary leak check method of choice tho'...
Thanks, advice heeded. Although I found a source for really cheap 134a Will use that.

Kidding aside, nitrogen is fine, smaller than refrigerants so it will find leaks OK, Helium is smaller than all but hydrogen, and less, um, reactive. Plus it's easy to find at party stores. The electronic helium detectors aren't nearly as common (or as cheap as...) refrigerant detectors.

My darn nitrogen detector is going off all the time...

Warning on those who use nitrogen or any other compressed gasses when in a confined space -- It Will Suffocate You! Contrary to what many might think, the human body's suffocation warning is a response to elevated dissolved CO2 rather than a shortage of oxygen. So nitrogen will displace oxygen and you'll just pass out with no warning at all. Use appropriate caution.
