Default 1982: Hardwiring Gauge Cluster.

I currently have my gauge cluster spread out across my kitchen table to change the odometer gear. Having found the plastic holding the gear pin cracked as well I was waiting on some epoxy to dry to give a little more strength. In that time I decided I am not putting that stupid, rotten printed circuit back on there.

I also found what appears to be water damage inside the cluster. Including a wrinkled sticker on top of the cluster. Inside I found screws with a light coat of rust. Along with that I found a strange white build up almost everywhere. This has me worried considering the speed-o has not been working.

On to the point of this thread.

I was only able to "acquire" a MY1984 gauge cluster wiring diagram. How different is the 1984 cluster to the 1982? I haven't taken the time to explicitly compare the diagram to the traces. I see a few extra things that my car doesn't have such as ABS warning lights and what not.

With some inspiration from this thread:

I've come up with this to aid in deciphering the thing, as hurried and sloppy as it is:

As of now I'm off to track down some plastic multipin connectors locally if I'm lucky. I'm not here to reinvent the wheel, I just want to make it work without looking like a rat's nest.

As it lays on the table as is without flattening at the widest points.

~16"x~5"

Anyways, I got the goods:

Now its just a matter of making it work.

Mine is still working and happy results. I did a second for a local member and it also worked well.

Good luck.

How did you attach the wires to the lightbulbs?

I got frustrated with that and had to put it down for the night. I don't really want to solder them.

I did solder to each bulb. A bit tedious. Used a Harbor freight solder station with the alligator clips to hold the bulb holder and the wire while I soldered.

You are a more patient man than I.

My solder skills are not up to par for that. After the solder refusing to stick to anything, the supposedly high quality electronic solder, and being the unwilling recipient of a new brand on my middle finger I had enough of that.

I've got something that will work in the temporary then I'll probably do something with LEDs as the lights quit working.
