Default Intermittent electric problem - ignition switch?

Hi folks,

I've got an intermittent, but fairly frequent, problem in my '93 GTS. I have Sirius/XM satellite radio connected to my Sony head unit. Sometimes, the Sirius/XM doesn't initialize - the head unit doesn't see it. The reason I think this might be the ignition switch - or maybe an interlock relay - is that, every time this happens, the radio does not turn off when the ignition is turned off. Instead, at that point, I have to restart the engine and turn it back off in order to get the radio to turn off.

Anyone seen this behavior before?

Thanks,
Paul

I had this issue with my Sirius box as well. Some times the alpine would see it and some times not. Just had to cycle the ignition. No need to start the car. It's not the Sharks fault, it's all an aftermarket unit that hates you problem

Not sure your theory explains why my radio stays on after I shut off the ignition and pull the key out, though. That behavior is 100% corrrelated with non-detection of the satellite receiver. And, yes, I do have to restart the car to get it to redetect or to get the radio to shut off... cycling the ignition without cranking does not do it.

Frankly, I can't remember how it's wired in. I think I piggy-back soldered it to the radio's own supply at its plug.

Nothing else that I've noticed is remaining powered, but other things wouldn't be as obvious.

You have a key-lock section, a flat metal rod from that to the electrical switch section, and the electrical switch section. Wear in the metal link is one possibility, wear in the electrical switch is another possibility.

You can, with some minor difficulty, change the electrical switch and the metal link without having to pull the key-lock portion, which can be a pain.

Thanks.

I've replaced the ignition switch in at least two of my previous 928s, but I hadn't seen this symptom before, so I wasn't sure whether it was the switch or could be a sticky relay somewhere. At 115K miles, it's probably due for a new switch anyway. Guess I'll try it and see.
