Default Strong Exhaust Smell

Is anyone out there also experiencing strong smell emitting from the exhaust. I've got a '79 5-spd, which tends to posses a rather fragrant scent -- to the point that my cloths smell after diving. Any ideas on how to cure?

Had the same thing happen when I had a 79 928, Check to see if your catalytic conferter is going bad.

Had the same thing happen on my 86 928. I got tired for driving teary eyed and I replaced the Cats.

I would attempt to get to the root of the problem and investigate why the engine is running so rich; simply replacing the cats is a bandaid at best.

I'll be trouble shooting the fuel delivery system soon, so maybe this will yield the culprit. My 928 has been experiencing some symptoms that may contribute to the car running rich. I've suspected that I have a faulty injector(s) for a while now. A good fuel system tune up should be a start.

Hupp,

How old is your O2 sensor?

My 88S4 was very smelly a few years ago. I thought it was the cats going bad also. A test pipe (no cats) also left the same bad smell, so I replaced the O2 sensor, with 80 somthing k miles on the original.

The new O2 sensor cured my foul (egg like) smelling exhaust.

No problem inside cabin, but even standing behind the car, let alone in a garage with g-door open is not advised, strong smell, not like any other. Maybe I should look at the mixture too.

Johan928,

I've got a '79 model with the K-Jetronic injection. I'm not entirely acquainted with the car yet, but I do not believe the K-Jetronic is equipped with the O2 sensor since it is a mechanical system.
