What's the secret to taking off the seatback release *****? I know there's metal clip in there somewhere that holds them on ...

Three Wheelin'
Loop a length of strong cord behind the **** and pull (somewhat gently) and they will come off with out breaking. You may or may not be able to save the little metal clip that holds it on. YMMV.
