Unhappy A different kind of starting problem

Below is a question to the PCA 928 guru and his response to my starting problem on my '84 auto. A search of this forum, and others, has yet to result in an answer. I have replaced the starter relay to no avail. In his comment below, what is the neutral safety switch he mentions, where is it, and how is it replaced?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

"I have searched around on various forums but not found an answer for this starting question. When the car is cold, or been sitting for awhile, it will not start in PARK. The dash will light up but no turning over. I then move the auto gearshift to Nuetral and it will start up without any problem. After driving awhile and everythings warmed up, it will start fine in PARK. In warm or hot weather, it will start in PARK without an issue. I assume its some electrical issue in the shift mechanism where it goes into the tunnel. I have not checked relays or fuses. Do you think is some electrical issue at the shift mechanism that needs cleaning or something? Is the shift cover difficult to remove?

Thanks for all you help.

You may have a flaky neutral

You may have a flaky neutral safety switch. I would first check the connections on the switch and also reseat the starter relay (XIV on your 1984)"

First - It ALWAYS helps to give the info on your car model year, USA/RoW/Japan, etc.

The neutral safety switch is on the side of the transmission at the shift cable. Adjustment is probably better than replacement, as it sounds as if you are just a tiny bit off.

from the info provided,
the transmission selector cable/switch needs to be adjusted,
this operation is done under the car at the left side of the transmission.

NOTE make sure that the both rear wheels are off the ground and the chassis is securely supported before you attempt adjustments.
