Default Strong fuel odor in cabin under very specific circumstances?

Hi!

I have noticed that when my tank is reading 1/2 and below, I never smell fuel in the cabin.
Additionally, if I fill the tank to 1/2 or less, I never smell fuel in the cabin.

However, this weekend was the third time that I have filled to the 3/4 full mark on my instrument panel, and all 3 times there is a pretty strong fuel smell.

I do have new flexible fuel lines installed for the past 6 months, and they are still clean and perfectly dry.

Does this pattern indicate anything specific? Is the likely culprit still the 3 way adapter in this case?

Thanks.

Dan

Dan,
1) It could be the vent hose that goes through the frame rail to equalize the pressures between the sides of the fuel tank. When you smell fuel, look under the car on the right side of the fuel tank for spillage.
2)It could also be the fuel level sender seal on top of the gas tank. When you smell fuel, look under the hatch carpet and remove the round plastic cover. See if there is fuel on top of the tank.
3) It could be the 3 way in the passenger front fenderwell.

Since it happens primarily with a full tank, my bet is on the seal on top of the fuel tank sender. Even if you don't see gas there when you pull up the carpet, it could be the culprit. Very cheap and easy fix, if so.

Default Update

Thanks for all the great advice.
I drove for a few minutes and checked under the rear deck carpet as suggested,
and found the source of the fuel odor, gasoline has leaked past the fuel sender gasket and is pooling at the top of the tank.

I have a new gasket on order from Field Marshal Roger,

and hopefully will have this solved quickly.
Again, thanks for the advice and recommendations. You guys are awesome.

Don't smoke a cigar while replacing the gasket. Just my helpful advice.
