Wrong Odometer gear
Over the weekend I pulled the pod to repair my odometer and oil pressure guages. When I got the odometer apart and was trying to install the new gear I discovered that the new gear did not slip onto the shaft. After further inspection I discovered that the gear was not identical to the old one. The inner "gear" of the older one has about twice as many teeth as the new one. So obviously it is not going to work even if it were to fit the shaft. The gear I bought was from a Rennlist member, but I suppose there could be different gauages out there. Does anybody have any ideas about another size odometer gear. Where I could get it. The speedometer works fine so I don't want to buy a new guage. BTW if anyone needs an unused odometer gear I have one for $40.00. That's what it cost me.
Thanks.
Thanks.

From my research, there are something like 7 different possible gear combinations that you "could" have in this type of VDO speedometer. There are 2 very common types: usually referred to as the "US" and the "Euro" gear. Jeff Kaplan's www.odometergears.com has pictures of both of these types.
Last winter I learned much more about odo gears than I ever wanted to, as my car had 3rd size gear...one that is very close to the Euro gear, but with a just slightly smaller inner gear set. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to which gear is used where. I had to have my speedo repaired at a VDO authorized repair center, as a replacement gear was not availble fromt he "net-based sources. The VDO technician told me that they have seen at least 7 different types of gears (admittedly this is a Canadian outfit and that might increase the combinations out there). Mine was the 3rd most popular type (still much less common, though) behind the ones Jeff and other sell on the 'Net. BTW: Even though he did not have a gear for me, Jeff is a stand-up guy amd my experience with him was extremely good...highly recommend looking him up.
Jeff advised me to count the teeth on both the outer and inner gear sets and then match this up to the replacement gear. I'll guess you have the "Euro" type gear from your description, but count the teeth to be sure. If you do not have one of the two most common types, you will have to find a speedo repair shop to get your fixed. There the only ones that can source the parts...and I could not find one that would sell me just the gear I needed.

Thanks all for the replies.
Randy, I'm sure things will be resolved with the old gear. Just wanted people to know that I like to do business with the Rennlist members.
Don T, Great site! Thanks!
SteveCo, Thanks as well for the in-depth info. I didn't realize there were soooo many gear combos. I'll check out your contacts as well.
Thanks again guys! You're a great help!
