Default Ebay Flipper

Wow! This "PCA member" is trying to turn a $3,400 profit in a little more than 1 week with this beautiful '84 928S.

It was listed on Portland Craigslist on 3/14 for $8,500. I was corresponding with the owner for the next 2 days, while getting more pics, when it was sold at full price on the same day as I was prepared to make an offer on 3/16. Wished I could've been given the chance to match or beat it.

Just saw this listing on Ebay: 1984 928 S
today with starting bid at $11,900 with BIN for $16,900.

The owner even says he is a PCA member and owns 3 Porsches. He may owe taxes, but doubt he owns any Porsche if he is flipping a beautiful 928S in 10 days after getting a steal. He is not a 928 lover!

I am all for making a profit after owning a car, but flipping it after 10 days with this beautiful car is a little too much!

Still mad at myself.

Guess I'll be the counter point.

Whatever the market will bear is fine by me. I feel your pain, I've been there myself missing out on a nice car at a good price.

It's not the "flippers" fault the first seller undersold the car though.

If I saw a nice air cooled 911 priced at the value from 3-4 years ago, I'd be all over it and I'd have it on eBay before the sun went down that same day.

Yeah, you're right. Part of the frustration is mad at myself for not having to jump on it as early as the flipper. Losing out to someone who clearly doesn't appreciate the 928 makes matters worse. The previous owner has undersold, but a flipper is a flipper and there is no love for that.

Anyway, I am waiting for the 928 to arrive in the next 2 weeks or so. Worked out for me in the end, so not too disappointed.

Sorry to say, but you sound bitter because you failed to pull the trigger on a good deal.. In this market many buyers are waiting with cash in hand looking for undervalued cars to flip.

Buy low sell high isn't that the American dream ?

But what does that have to do with 928 ownership?

Buy low, spend $$$, ignore loss.

I see flippers all over the hobby, and it's really bad when they throw the fish back in the same pond. At least this guy took it from CL to eBay. Different pond, perhaps different buyers?

On one forum/site, there was a kid who "flipped" about a 1/2 dozen cars a year. Really a curbstoner, but online. Should be illegal, and perhaps was. He got called out and now flips on CL. Haven't seen him on may much anymore, but nonetheless, still out there.

In Oregon, is there sales tax on a car purchase? If not, I can see why it's easier to curbstone and flip cars. In my state, unless you get the seller to leave the title open upon sale, which is illegal, one has to pay sales tax to re-title. While only 4% (yeah, who ever thought one would say, "only..."), its better than other states which are 8, or even close to 9%

$8500... a steal if no major issues. Well bought. Love that red interior.

Sorry you lost out. You'll find another one out there. Consider it your opportunity to get a 5 speed.

He made no profit yet. This auction has no bids. Even if he does get the opening bid, it doesn't mean the buyer is going to follow through.

If I really wanted this car, I would contact the seller and make an offer below the starting bid but a little more than the $8.5K he paid. Then see what happens.

I agree that this car is worth more than 8.5K or even 11.9K. It sucks you missed out but I see nothing wrong with flippers. There are still great 928s out there. Be patient and the "next" right one will come along.

It'll be there for a while. Just contact the seller with your offer after it expires.

You learned about opportunity costs, and he may learn about risk/reward.

It looks like a very nice car - and looks like it might be worth his ask for 'someone' - but its an old car at the high end of the pricing and on eBay (sight unseen) I doubt it will sell - no bids yet.

If it stays that way swoop in later after the auction closes.

I'm not against people seeing a good deal and taking it, hoping to turn a profit. There are other possible explanations though, e.g. a spouse saying that they already have too many cars ..

it's just my opinion, but for the guys looking for 928's (not me) to get more recognition in the Porsche world. And increase in value. This is a natural progression.

If Wayne Carini flipped a pristine condition 928 GTS you guys would be thanking him for bringing attention to the beauty of 928's ....

I'd find a new spouse, or just be content dating... The cars on the other hand, they stay...
