Default What are the best "aftermarket upgrades" for the 928?

Hi
I would like some input and opinions on the current state of the art for aftermarket "upgrades" for the 928?
In particular, are there any common-sense improvements which can add
reliability and performance to a 928?
I'm not really thinking in terms of
wild mods, but, more in line with improvements that fall in the category of
typical maintenance and refreshing/replacing parts past their service life.
Any comments would be very interesting, and appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Dan

I'm a big fan of the LED conversions.

With such a low output alternator on the earlier models the amperage savings of the LEDs is certainly helpful. The mod modernizes the vehicle, makes it more reliable (LED vs incandescent) and the exterior and the interior lighting is quite often a more vibrant light.

Even door and dome lights, often the cause of a drained battery draw almost nothing compared to originals.

Borla stainless steel cat back exhaust.

If your state allows, CAT, air pump, emissions plumbing, engine driven fan and aux electric fan delete. Add a large electric puller cooling fan.

Jeez, i could go all night...

The ones I've installed on my car, that I like very much:

- Greg Brown's fuel lines
- LED instrument cluster illumination
- New design window switches

RS steering wheel - chunky and feels much better than the stock wheel
RMB - more for the sound than ant sort of gain

A suggestion as I am yet to install it -
S300 chip set - very excited about this, I'm about to find out what'll do for my car.

I second the RS steering wheel. Much better than stock.

Just so many little things to get!

- Porken tensioner
- Flexplate clamp (I have porkens but there's now others)
- LED everything--and add Ed Shierer's dimmer switch
-- I haven't tried the CREE headlights but will before it comes out of storage next month
-- The Daytime Running Light mod (relay w/ LED bulbs)
- Roger's/Carl's highflow exhaust w/ x-pipe and cats
- Greg Brown's fuel lines
- External filter for the PSD
- Breathing system mod; albeit I think the jury's still out on which is best
- And the metal 928 Intl belly cover has still got to be the best bargin; I don't think the price has gone up in 15 years...

What's the latest recommendation for the audio upgrade?
The units are getting much shallower as there is no CD or cassette?

Have many people successfully Megasquirted these cars? I was actually expecting to see more threads and a large established base of setup info, but I haven't...I've seen more comments along the lines of "It's a pain, and won't be worth it because the stock system works well." I've always been intrigued by the idea though...

Megasquirt in theory gives you the ability to tune to a much finer degree than the stock computers do. The issue is creating a base map that works with the engine which requires hours of tuning. Not to mention having to tweak software and firmware to meet your needs.

Sharktuning on the other hand is easy as the base tune is already set and all you are doing is improving upon the base tune to work better with today's more advanced fuels compared to what was available in the 80's.

Also, with audio, the speakers have gotten better for the price point and the amplifiers pack more punch in a smaller size and generate less heat.

I try to stick with speakers and amps made in the US and or Europe.

There are still a few companies like CDT (made in Buellton California) and German Maestro (new name of the old MB Quartz still made in the same factory in Germany) that make high end speakers for a fair price. Especially CDT.

You can hunt around on ebay for some good used high end speakers and amps for way less than what they were new, especially when you consider they were made using quality parts in countries other than China.

In other words, you get what you paid for.
