Yes, spend $8000 on a timing chain job or buy a nice 928 driver..easy decision.

There aren't a lot of models to choose from back in the good old days
the 928 is arguably the best one of the bunch especially if you consider
how people's tastes have changed in regards to comfort.
Having owned both the 911 ('86 Carrera, and was hooked) and now an '83S i can honestly say the 928 is every bit as exciting
to own and as well made as 9 1 1..
But my shoulders have a bit more room, i have more torque and the ride/handling is hands down better.
I think the older lower price cars are picking up appeal compare to newer car due to reliabilty?
I've seen so much defective design problem on newer BMW that the prices are dropping like brick. A 2007 Alpina B7 cost the same as a 1986 Alpina B7. A 2011 750 LI valued at $35k now when new was $80k. A timing chain guide job on a 30k mile BMW cost $8k. I was considering selling the S4 but with problems I see in newer BMW and my Bimmer buddies are selling their newly acquired AMGs, BMWs to buy back old BMWs and sinking more money into reviving the car than its worth. A $2000 TB job on the 928 is looking pretty cheap.
Even my wife's X5 50k mile car requires valve lifter replacement or new head. I think I'll just let her drive until the engine explode then dump it instead of fixing it.

I get the vintage Porsche bug, non-specific but it seems to mean "911". Four-cylinder models do not inspire me - their history has too much VW in it - but wait, the VW history is even stronger for the 911 - gotta ignore that. I learn that the best "raw" experience would be a pre-nanny-end-swapper 911 with a G50 transmission - 1987-89. I seem to be late to this party, though - $30,000 - and the Youtube video for changing spark plugs belongs in the "horror" genre. The end result is yet another old 911 (probably in faded Guards Red), driven like a Prius by an old guy who might otherwise be a docent at a museum.
And there you have it: me, an old guy who is incautiously doing his own mechanical work and, if he succeeds, will drive his Porsche-pure 928 around incautiously, grinning at those docents. Overall, doing something special, mesmerizing the crowd at the PCA meetings. With enough money left over to buy an old Boxster (and with the new-found confidence to do the IMS/RMS job himself).
This story is being repeated all over the world, every day. Don't you think? Even the price of old Boxster 986s is going up.

I can tell you this, my phone is ringing off the hook (email too, without the ring).
Lots of interest, very good action. Certainly, people are now considering restoration as a viable option for the early 928 (and that is what most of them need). The value proposition is starting to make sense.

Anyone else experience this: the rare summer evening when you shed the tattered old jeans, put on some nice casuals, take the 928 to a gas station and stand there filling it up. -the curious looks you get from the unknowing and the knowing looks you get from the aware..... great ego booster

I took my 82 5 speed, which is for sale, to a local car show that had all kinds of hotrods and four DeTomaso Panteras parked in a row.
I snuggled up to those cars and generated as much interest as the fully restored, high dollar exotics. Even the Pantera owners commented on how cool the 928 looked.
I got a couple of serious bites for the sale, so we will have to see….

or people taking video. Kind of annoying actually. ( My 928 RS Concept Sketch thread is 3500 views higher in a few months w/o a post in many months ) Another real indicator..
I can't tell you how many times i see people beside me taking video w/ their phones
it sure isn't my good looks !

There's also a large number of folks who lurk without posting here, many who were previously more active but for whatever reason are now more passive participants. Plus, even though we always suggest that 'search is your friend', some of us still post to threads from relatively new users that have been covered many times previously. Like moths to the flame though, we still sneak in and see what's happening to the other 'addicts'. Some comfort is found when we find we are not alone, I guess.

My 928 has always been a conversation piece around Fresno - my wife says that by owning it I am performing a public service - but I've noticed the level of interest from bystanders has soared in the past year. People believe it is some kind of new Porsche, almost as if styles have come full-circle (as they usually do).
