Sean,
I've always had the backrests completely dismantled when I did my work on the lumbar mechanics. I've used brake cleaner to clean off all the mechanism parts to get rid of old hardened grease/dirt/etc. I have several tubes of Superlube grease that I use for almost anything like this I want to stay operable for a long time. It is very moisture resistant, and I believe has a small amount of Teflon in it.
Glad getting it apart was not a problem, and that you've found the 'culprit'. Now - just gotta' get that culprit disposed of.
