Default Leaking Fuel after Fill-up

I recently had a problem that my '83 S leaked a whole bunch of fuel as I filled it up. Not a good problem safety-wise and expensive to boot.

I expected that the hose [928 201 194 03] that connects the filler neck to the top of the fuel tank went bad. I started to pull the fuel tank and noticed that the plastic "Union Nut" [113 201 375] that holds down the fuel level sensor had cracked, so fuel could just leak out as the level hit the top of the tank. Not good, but easier to fix and it doesn't require removing the fuel tank.

So, if you have a leak at your fuel tank, don't assume that there is a crack or that the hose is bad. It could be easier to fix than imagined.

I had the same problem - with a loose plastic nut that seals the tank on top. I was told that the plastic nut should be boiled and installed hot which would then shrink as it cooled to create a tighter seal. Haven't had any problems with leaks in the last year since it was fixed.
