License plate is a heck of a poor way to try and locate a car, but he needs to put a lot more information on the table, when owned, what state, and somebody with experience tracking down cars might be able to help him.

OTOH once he finds a red/brown 81 how does he plan to know its the right one?

 

If he spends a few $ and signs up for carfax, you can run a carfax with the plate if it is still being used. That would give him a registration city.

 

The Vin# is the best tracer, but with a plate # you may be able to get the Vin# and go from there. I sure hope is hasn't been 're-cycled' into a rice burner. Good Luck with the search.

 

Last time I had an unlimited AutoCheck acct I ran the vin on every car I ever owned, sad results.
