Porsche has recently been very quiet about their potential fourth product line. That might be because of the energy that went into the Cayennt launch, and the success they have with it. Or it might have to do with the focus on the 997 and new Boxster engineering. It is quite possible that the decision for that new model has been delayed.

It's unnlikely that the Cayenne platform could be adapted for a sports car. That means, the development of that new front engine model would either be all at Porsche (very expensive) or a co-development with someone, just like the Cayenne was. All we can do at this time is wait and see...

from concept to production for the Cayenne and Motor Trend thinks Porsche will build a V8 sports car in uhhhhh...1.5 possibly 2 years?

Dudes and Dudettes, you guys are missing the point. Porsche probably started working on the 998 at the same time as the SUV, and are probably testing it in disguise just like the 928 (inside an Audi 100. )

The executives at Porsche have always known that the " ...928 concept was awesome " many opted to drive it as their " company car " The problem has always been the Porsche buyer for whom " Porsche " means 911 . Porsche only produced about 61,000 928s they could have easily made far more , they just could not sell them !! Ferry Posche once said something like ..." they built what they would like and hoped it would sell " in the case of the 928 ....it did not sell well .

I just read in CAR that because of Aston Martin's direct challenge to Porsche's market with its new designs, a 928 replacement (they just called it a "new 928, distinct from the "998") would be needed to compete against AM's upcoming DB9 (which is already in testing stages) as a "four-seater" possibly with "four doors."

Interesting thing here is that the 998 will be a separate car from the 928 replacement. While they would have a "new" 928 with a V8 in front, the 998 will have a rear-mounted flat-8 as an extension of the 911 range. Apparently Porsche wants to expand its model range significantly.

Lucky for Porsche buyers, they company is well aware of what competition can do and needs to find ways to sell more cars.

Maybe that'll be another co-development with Porsche, as a 928 sucessor. Bodys manufactured by VW again, engines in Stuttgart, final assembly in Leipzig. All speculation at this time...

Two Porsche salesmen have independently told me about the 997 coming with an eight cylinder option. Interestingly, when I talked to my friend who is an engineer at Weissach, he said he has never heard about a such thing. He should know, as he is involved in the 997 development.

I have been wondering for a while, if an 8 cylinder could work in the 911. The Cayenne engine is too high, so that's not an option. Then Excellence speculated that IF there is an 8, it had to be a flat one. But I kept wondering, what the impact on weight distribution, serviceability, and other practical matters would be.

At this time I believe my friend, because the components he's working on would be affected by a different engine. And while he cannot confirm, if things are true, he can say honestly, if something is not true. I have never gotten any BS from him.

Whats next some 1200 hp Porsche 999?

I remember the good ole days when I could keep up with the names. Now its 9** I need a play book to keep track of what 9** looks like what. When are they going to run out of 9**?

They are blowing their load by making too many Porsche models and instantly puting some 9** at the end. I still scratching my head over 951=944, 911=930 turbo, 928=968=998.

I think some Porsches are perfect molds that shouldn't be abandoned or forgetten and should be repeated year after year like the 911. Why kill off the 928 and rename it because the market took a dump on 928's? If Duran Duran can regroup after 15years and come back so can the 928 and 944.

When I think of Porsche I think of 911, then 928, and 944. Nothing else...
Nothing has made more impression or imagination, inspired me to get up off my ***, learn something, get rich and buy one of those cars above.

I want a 928 back as much as you guys but it would be so "me too" if Porsche followed along the lines of Ford (Thunderbird and new Mustang), Mazda RX8, Nissan 350, and all other "back from the dead" or retro vehicles.

Also, unless you are in the Porsche "in crowd" few people can remember the numbers Porsche uses to name their cars and marketing the 998 as the rebirth of the 928 will simply confuse most people that don't know Porsche models all that well. I believe that will have a negative impact on sales.

The new V8 should be a completly new car with new name, perhaps... "SALT" or ""THYME"
