Default '85 body & paint restoration

A couple of recent pictures of my US '85 paint & body restoration being done in a local shop in South Carolina. I decided to replace both doors due to finding out originals having more bondo in them than I would feel comfortable with.

I think the 928 looks pretty good as an open wheel racer I look forward to pictures of the process.

I was lucky to find a shop owner who is letting me disassemble and re-as assemble after painting to save some $$

Hey Glenn - Yes I certainly hope to get to SITM with this car - should be finished with painting by mid March, according to Body shop owner - then I have to put it all back together- Lol, I thinking about 6 weeks for that, going to be close!

Putting the car back together is the easy part.. Just be careful. I took off both fenders, front and rear bumper , both mirrors and the fuel door. I used a little trick to install the fenders and front bumper. I attached the front bumper to both fenders, and with a friend we carefully installed all three parts. Took 10 minutes.

Quite the project. Staying with the original color? I'd almost, some days more than others, buy another 928 to do as a total restoration. And just use the one I have now as a daily driver.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing the finished results.

Brian.

Yes I do plan on painting it with the original color -Grand Prix White -paint code L908, I want to go with the original single stage paint also. I will post more pictures as it procedes forward, right now just a lot of sanding and blocking.

Some updated pictures with more progress - sent doors and fenders to welder capable of welding aluminum without warping, continued working on rear quarter panels, priming blocking, repeating process several times, also sand blasted rust in rear quarter window panels, and luckily no rust holes found -epoxy primered afterwards

Hi

Just a little thing..

The second picture from the top shows how the shop is taping the quarter window openings from the outside.

You should somehow w/o annoying them ask that they tape from the back (inside) and paper so that the edge of the pinched metal panels is exposed to paint.

in other words so that primer and paint get to the edge of the pinched metal inside the quarter window channel.

This area is prone to very high moisture levels and corrosion.. to not get a good continuous coat of primer and topcoat would be a shame.

Good luck with the restoration, -Matt

Thanks for the tip Matt, the owner of the shop used a rust preventative red epoxy primer on the flanges and shelve area prior to spraying the gray primer surfacer, which there will be several coats between block sanding. After reading the blogs on drilling a drain holes to prevent moisture build up, what is the consensus on this? - seems to be a variety of opinions?
