There is an interesting thread on the 996 & gt3 board titled 998. Other than the first post which had a little info i hadn't seen before i don't like the undertone of the others. What explains the dislike of the 928 by the vw lovers. The 928 is the best porsche and best car on the road imho.

Might want to give yourself a whack on the head with a big stick. This should knock you back to reality. Yup I agree the 928 is a good car maybe even great concidering the perfomance level per dollar.

I really get a kick out of whipping my buddies new GT convertable Mustang with my 25 year year old car. He gets a kick out me always working on my car. HMMMM Makes you think huh?

I do, reread your post........."best car on the road"? how is that statement any different from the sillyness the guys on the 996 page are guilty of? BTW I read all the posts there and I sense no "undertones".....There feels to me a huge difference between the folks who own the 928 vs those who own the 996. That being said, neither group is bad, just different from eachother. I like to think the 928 owners are generally more familiar with their cars, with a deeper appreciation for the design and character of the car. The 996 folks may reflect less of this because they have not spent alot of time wrenchng their cars, and the cars are SUBSTANTIALLY newer. Doesn't make either group bad, just different. If you wanna see a real cat fight, watch the frequent dust ups between the 993 board and the 996 board.

So they express an opinion we don't agree with, no sense in getting the panties in a wad about it. I have one of each model, visit both boards and see this nonsense all the time.......Neither group has a monopoly on maturity.....

First off I did say it was in my opinion. And the post was about the disdain the air cooled crowd have for the 928 (mentioned here many times). But the opinion is shared by many others. Don't the 911's come hydrated now? As far as other cars I'll let this post talk,

from Mark Kibort
" talking reality here. year for year, the 928 smoked on the vet, right up until the Z06. I think the Zo6 was the first year where the balance was right (transmission in the rear , what a concept. circa 1977 porsche 928), 405hp and 3400lbs. At $50k vs a used GTS, 5 years older for $35k, the 928, in my opinon was an equal car, with upside far exceeding the Z06. remember, the stock Zo6 brakes are not as good),but the 6 speed is pretty good, but not a close ratio by any stretch, and
6th gear is more unusable than the 87 S4's 5th. so actually, the ratios are the same. I surely like the feel of the shifting of the Zo6 and the slightly older C5 models. and I think, they may be better balanced when radically stripped out. the older C4s were never a problem, in any form to the 928. I raced one of the ZR1s at Speed GT 3 years ago, and it was not even close to the level of my 1984 5 liter part euro race car. poorly balanced, good power, but poor handling. very close to the performance of some of the radically modified LT1 powered race cameros in SCCA ITE. back in in the mid 80s, the c4 vet was pumping out an anemic 240hp and was a train wreck as far as quality. easy to work on, but a train wreck none the less. "

Flooring it away from a light and dragging some idiot is silly. If you want to do that get yourself a trans am and modify it and if you "beat" the other guy you win WHAT? Better yet go to a strip and do it for real and let the lights give you your reaction time. Big Deal.

You looked at this from a perspective that I don't agree with. The 928 is not about dragging or racing in public it is about the driving experience. That means twisty and quick driving on roads where it is practical while sitting in a luxurious environment. I'll go along with the video clip of the motorweek host who has driven everything out there when he said the only car that he really wanted to keep in all the years testing every car on the road was the 928 because it did everything and did it well. The only other cars i would put in the same category without having driven either would be the vanquish and 360F1.

Aluminum baby. that's what it's about. Actually, it's about the advanced nature of the 928, such that almost 30 yrs. later, it is still an awesome car that performs like a 50K dollar car but costs maybe 26K at the most (pick a year, 93 GTS?)

The aluminum is a symbol of the advanced thinking that went into it, and the world has finally caught up. - Ruf
