In a field find...what a shame

It just looks like that particular dash was really trashed. Maybe flooded, maybe just sitting outside in the sun for a long, long time. So the foam in the dash separated from the dash itself and curled up. The top of the glove box looks straight.
So I don't think a rhino sat on it.

The problem with full leather is it shrinks as it dries out and gets sun-damaged. The leather dash is a vinyl dash with the end vinyl edges trimmed, which also compromises the integrity of the vinyl, and as the leather shrinks, it actually pulls the top vinyl layer off the underlying foam substrate. In most cases, it just produces minor warping, until an owner decides to get it re-covered, or replaces the dash with a wholly vinyl one. In this case, it was left unchecked and its pulled the vinyl up badly.
I'm probably a sicko, but I think this car looks like a fun project for someone who knows 928's well and wants a project car. It has all the right ingredients to end up with a very enjoyable driver - sure it'll probably never be a show-car, but it could turn out to be a very fun toy. If the timing belt is intact and the engine turns over with a breaker bar, its worth a go! I can think of other 928's which are being saved from comparable beginnings (Kevin's junkyard car, airtekhvac's OB, brealytrent's '84 Euro, Roger's half-milliom-mile '86 S2). I really hope this car gets enjoyed - sports seats, borg-warner syncro'd 5-speed, 10.4:1 310hp engine.

Ha...been watching this one....it's not nearly as bad as mine....mine sat 19 years under a tree in a field.....if I had the funds, I would have probably snagged it....seen a few lately I was interested in......this went a little high, imho.....I paid 650 for #30, currently in for about 1200$....and she runs quite well now.......I personally like the project ones, but they seem to be drawing higher prices here lately.

Corrosion projects not my cup of tea, plus not a good sign for the new owner to bail asking what looks like ebay plus shipping, ie erase my mistake. I can see it as a donor car if you need the parts, but parting it out, I would not want to be on the buying end of any of those parts without a LOT of cleaning and testing, and flat out would not take the risk if I knew the source.

I bought an outside the barn find. Fortunately it was protected by a layer of smog goo after sitting for 11 years in the LA basin.
This one unfortunately got attacked by swamp gunk. Would have been a really desirable car if it had been garaged. Too bad it was left to rot

This poor 928 is now mine. I hauled it home finally two weeks ago which involved a three day 2700 mile trip in my PU and with my trailer. The car is still in the trailer and will be for a while yet while I get some other projects done, including some concrete for a slab where I'll be putting up my new 2 post lift.
I think that one needs to be able to see beyond the terrible apparent condition of this car in order to evaluate it correctly. I don't actually see any rust on it, at least in the usual places like under the rear quarter windows. The last seller said he had the engine running until the double dizzy belt broke and it stopped. He also said that he opened up some of the plumbing on the front of the engine for one of his prospective buyers and took a picture and it looks like it is new inside. I haven't looked yet myself.
I don't plan to part this car out and hope to do a near complete restoration of it although I wont likely be going back to bare metal, except outside, or a total disassembly, but I will repaint it and put a complete new interior in it. That will be after I get it sorted mechanically and electrically. I already have the new leather for the interior and all of the replacement components. The Sport seats will be rebuilt from their present condition. I'm going to make the interior nearly white, called Angel Mist, with Sandstone accents and with the darker components in a very dark gray, called Bohemian Gray. I'll stay with the Guards Red paint color.
It may not quite be up to a diamond in the rough but it is at least a nice lump of coal waiting to be turned into one.
