Default Removing door cards

Ok I have a stupid question.
How do I remove the door lock ****? the **** you turn to unlock the door. I broke the last one and I thought I would be able to figure it out when I received the replacement but I guess I am just not smart enough.

If you have a little sharp pick (not sure what you call it, but they sell them in a set with various angles at most auto parts stores) you can pry up the center piece, and there's a screw underneath that you remove. Then just pull off the ****.

Center of the **** is a disc with two prongs, pry it out from an edge with a small screwdriver or plastic panel tool. This exposes a philps head screw, undo that and the **** comes off. Then the whole 3" diameter bezel behind the **** will unscrew, lefty loosey.

Great thanks. That's how I broke the old one but I thought it was me. Maybe its just brittle after 35 years.

No picture, Rob?
You're slipping.

My copy of PET (downloaded PDF file) has the door lock & stuff on page 804-05.

It gets easier if you apply pressure on the opposite side to ease slipping the edge of the screwdriver to pop off the cover.

I highly recommend the little pointy tools rather than the screwdriver. When I've used a screwdriver I always seem to mark up things but the pointy bits slip right in.

a few notes on the installation of the **** and the surround
The surround can and should be loosened by placing the palm of your hand on it and gently twisting it off.
When replacing the surround install it the same way then just make it snug,
if you tighten this part too much the lock **** will bind.
Same goes for the lock **** screw get tightened till its snug ,
best to count the turns of the screw when taking it out.

Hold the **** while loosening the screw and when tightening it so it doesn't move.
If you don't and there is too much torque applied, when the **** gets to the end of its normal travel, it will bend the rod that it's connected to which controls the lock.
If you wonder why turning the **** is so hard to lock and unlock the door on some cars, its because the rod is bent.

(*lightbulb ON*)

I'll have to check mine, because one of my door locks just can't seem to be locked/unlocked at all...

Note that late model year cars have a philips screw under the disk in the locking **** - early model years have a stud on the car side and nut to hold it on. Either way works out the same - I wonder why they changed it though?
