There should have been a reverse lockout. My '85 goes right into 2nd when pushing straight up from first.
When I first got my 928, I was baffled by the heavy throttle, but it's 2nd nature now.

The dogleg gearbox does have a lockout. Or at least it's supposed to.
I actually like it a lot, for the same reason as the racers - I only use first for taking off from a stop. Having the rest of the gears in the "H" is more practical, at least for me.
I honestly don't know about the turbo lag in the 944 (951). I've never driven one.
You might go spend some time in the other forums. They don't seem to be as active as this one, but there's still a good amount of info.
Good luck finding the right car for you (or having it find you).

Lockout often breaks.
Flat spot on my 84 USA was bad oxygen sensor.
Sounds like you need some other kind of car though, you've gotta be into these with all the warts

If you check the factory specs and HP/TQ or KPa curves, there is a dip in the mid range. Some careful exhaust/tuning work can help smooth it. But concur with others, doesn't seem to be your cup of tea.
