I don't recall this on my '90 S4 or '91 GT. Connected to the throttle linkage at the back on the inside - sticking up a bit and has a grey cable connected to it. Has a cap that exposes three pins.
This is an '87 S4 auto originally sold in Canada. Anyone?
That's a diagnostic connector, for reading engine timing from a second (test-only) crank-position sensor on top of the bellhousing. I don't think there has been anything that could make use of it for a couple of decades. It can safely be removed and tossed.
It is interesting that yours is mounted to a bracket off the throttle bellcrank assembly, rather than to a boss on the intake side-plate. Is yours a very early '87 by chance?
The pale-blue cap is another vintage diagnostic port, one on either side for sampling exhaust gas prior to the cats. Those can also be dispensed with, if desired. Use a 7/16" (IIRC) bearing ball to plug the fitting on the exhaust manifold.
Thanks. Yes, I picked this one up with just under 19k miles on the clock. She is getting up close to 22k miles now. 1 owner car, lightly driven. She was garaged and covered when not in use. I haven't done anything to clean anything in the engine compartment. That's just the way she was sold to me!

Wow, that is sweet! If you don't mind, please post some more detailed pictures of the engine compartment. It would be great to see how vacuum lines and ignition wires were routed at the factory, stuff like that.

The Bowden cable seams to have a bit more 'slack' then I would have thought...
Agree with Jim, more engine pics would be awesome!

I think this stuff is pretty well document, but I certainly don't mind putting up pictures. If there is a specific area of interest let me know.
