Default How to straighten the instrument pod

My instument pod is obviously tilted to one side. I've totally given up trying to use force. And there appears to be no logical way to loosen it. And, of course, the manual.....well, never mind the manual. And please don't ask why someone with a car like this is looking at the pod rather than out driving. Yes, I need help. Actually the pod being crooked is just part of the reason I'm looking for a way to readjust it. Anyone done this before?
Thanks

Same problem here, and on many other 928s. A fellow rennlister suggested that if I losen the pod lock, force the pod in a horizontal position, and then close the lock, it stays in place. That works somewhat - it's better than leaving it crooked. Apparently the only permanent solultion would be the remove the pod and use shims when remounting it.

Thanks Nicole. I still haven't figured out how the thing mounts, yet. And I did put force on it that way when I first got the car. But it's back again.
And Mark, I think it IS time to get crackin' on that supercharger design. I know what it is- when the car is running, and everything is fixed, then the human brain starts looking for other problems to fix. So having a crooked pod is a sign that everything is just fine.

Behind the paddle that locks the steering column tilt in place there are 3 allen-type screws, these allow the column/pod to be adjusted to line the pod up with the dash opening. There is enough play here to allow the entire assembly to tilt slightly; loosen the bolts, turn the column so that the pod is horizontal and re-tighten - fixed mine.

Jim, I thought so. Thanks for that. Now I've got more work to do. No, I saw those screws, and something said, "No, it couldn't be that easy".

I've had my pod off dozens of times....

Last spring, during a lovely beat-the-rattlesnakes-off-with-a-golf-club session at the local salvage yard here in Orlando, I discovered two "treasures" burried up to their spindles in the varigated mud of the wife-beater suburb known as "Bithlo".

-One of them had a perfect uncracked pod....

Normy gleefully running back to the semi-submerged 928 with allen wrenches and 10 mm socket in hand. $40 later and I'm in heaven...

WELL. For whatever reason, I could NOT get the left allen screw to feed into the upper cluster guide. You know, there are four of them, painted silver, with black grommets around the outside. They hold the cluster in place...

So I just left it out. My pod sits pretty close to level, but not as perfectly as my previous pod. I have it on my list at the next pod-pull event to work on this. Like most things on these cars, some gentle persuasion and multiple re-adjustments seems to eventually bring results.....

[I really did do this: Pound on the raised side with my fist. It worked...]

Normy!

Hahaha. Oh those silly "blurbs".
I will be looking for a pod, as mine is split right down the middle. And yes, three screws, a little adjusting, and it's level. What great engineering, despite my cursing sometimes, those Germans possess.
If only we even had a junkyard in this half of the state. Not a one. And I've seen only one 928 in the years I've lived here.
Well, I could go on about California, but it's getting so controversial, I think I'll leave that for my other favorite forum- BARTCOP.COM

Gregg;
As others have noted, the mounting bracket for the pod can be adjusted laterally (and a little longetudinally as well). I have attached a picture of a disassembled pod ( not mine, but one I found on the 'Net when researching for my pod rebuild last winter) below so you can see what it looks like. The aluminum bracket rotates around the steering column. Not sure how much adjustment there is on this, but you should be able to straighten it up.

My pod was tilted as well, but for a more basic reason: the PO simply left out all the pod bolts on the right-hand side! The tangle of wiring harnesses behind the pod were putting enough pressure in the wrong places to lift the pod up on that side about an inch. Easy enough to fix, but I did notice that there was a more serious adjustment method on the bracket and steering column at the time.

Thanks Steve. I'm getting much more comfortable working on this car now. Like I've said in other posts, for the longest time now I've only been working on vehicles that have trannies the size of the engine in this car. I can literally sit up under my Ford C900. Each wheel must weigh 250 pounds. Yes, the adjustment was successful. In fact, I got it too far the other way. No oil leaks now either. I'm happily going on my first real trip in the next few days, too. Should be fun driving up the coast of Oregon.
