If you are going through the trouble of replacing, and will need to add wiring anyway, why not put current-technology pieces in? And as fancy and luxurious as a ten-speaker system was at the time, the sound quality was barely adequate for listening to the news.
I upgraded those rear speakers by carefully cutting the old baskets out, and installed some better Infinity drivers in their place. Some delicate surgery removed part of the speakers' mounting frame perimeters so they could be glued into the factory surround, and the factory grills went back on for full stock appearance.
There are several threads on better aftermarket amps that fit in the stock location but deliver much more and better sound. The original Blau Reno head unit is a relic at this point. The Blau Alaska unit I replaced it with is almost a relic, saved only by its ability to play CD's instead of cassettes and accepts external audio in. As soon as I see a decent matte-black-faced single-DIN head unit with USB and BT, it's going in. I don't want bling in the console, but I would like to carry a music library on a stick instead of in the shoebox CD changer in the luggage area.

You should upgrade! I added a Kenwood head with BT, iHeart, Pandora, IPod, IPhone, Android audio streaming for $140 at Best Buy, $150 RockFord Fosgate Pbr 300x4 amp, $35 pair of 4" speaker in rear hatch and it sounds way better , esp with the BT audio streaming and hands free phone.
Still trying to upgrade more bass -testing out my Infinty Basslink. Want my spare wheel so no subs in there.

Get a decent amp to power the channels and run as few off of the head unit as you can, this way you will get the best sound with the least amount of distortion.
Also, choose a high quality head unit with all of the features you want. Upgrade from stock as much as possible as audio equipment has made a huge improvement in sound quality over the last 25 years.

Thanks for the info guys...I've only got sound from the front speakers on the new addition and I need more sound!
I'll have to search which speakers out there will fit in the stock locations and the preferred head units.

Blau Reno, the standard offering.
While motoring home from Denver when I first picked the car up, it gave me a voice alert about traffic and road construction ahead. Over the next hill a few minutes further, there was a flagman. My first exposure to the radio alert feature. Surprised the heck out of me. So it has that going for it...
