Default I'm gonna lose it...

I'm going to vent a bit. I Filled up the tank to full yesterday-which I never do and today the garage reeks of gas. Pulled the carpet in the hatch and looked down the top of the tank and there was a fair amount of gas pooled in the sender recess. I swear I replaced the sender gasket when I replaced my original leaky tank last year. The return hose appears dry. If that tank sprung a leak at the top I swear I'm gonna torch the car. In the meantime I guess I'll hope the gasket is bad and order a new one. Anything else I should check that won't involve dropping the tank again?

You swear you changed the sending gasket last year. Sounds like maybe you didn't. I had the same problem last month and it was the gasket. T

Its a good thing gas smells as bad as it does. The good news is no matter what the issue is, gas leaks are much cheaper to fix than gas fires. I would shotgun and replace everything rubber in the area.

i had the same issue. replaced the seal/sender. then about a month later i still had a smell. turned out that at some point a screw (as best as i could tell) had been used in the rear hatch area and just nearly punctured the tank. so it had a small small small pin hole. i had to drop the tank to fix it... UGH>

The smell could be from the vent tubing that goes through the frame from one side of the tank to the other. If it is cracked, when you fill all the way up, you'll get a gas smell. Same as the sender gasket when you fill all the way up. If you see no seepage around the top of your sender unit, look under the tank by the fill nozzle. If there is sign of seepage there, the vent tube that equalizes pressure between the two sides needs to be replaced. It's not a terrible job, but the tank needs to be not full and lowered slightly to replace.
