Default Spoiler alert ... it really does come up.

I'd read in old reviews that you can raise the spoiler to wash the rear window, but never found a latch and it looked immovable. And I'd never seen a photo of it raised. (I may be exposing myself to an RTFM admonition, however.)

Yesterday, I was trying to raise the hatch (I need new gas struts) and surprise! A bit of Porsche engineering on display - two springs and a safety cable, on each side.

(The rare time my car gets kicked out of the studio workroom for another project, it snows. Of course.)

As long as I'm at it, a couple more "dusted 928" photos from this morning. As long as they don't salt the roads, I can keep driving it.

That shed in the background, incidentally, was built by my wife's grandfather back in the 1920's to shelter the first cars of people who drove up to their boarding house (i.e., bed and breakfast) from NYC. An automobile-related historical artifact.

I have the folding wing too, but for some reason mine stopped folding a month ago when washing the car.

Just remember, if it stays up for more than 4 hours you need to call Roger.

Roger will get a very large syringe and start removing starting fluid until the wing goes down.

The "folding" is a byproduct of the adjustable wing. It is adjustable for rake or angle of attack for you pilots.
The little block seen on post 2 allows the adjustment. Porsche did not care about cleaning the rear window, etc. and that is not the reason for the folding upwards of the wing.
They did care about cost, so it went away, as did the piston squirters.
My 87 is fortunately an early one.

OK, I was hoping I wouldn't have to ask: what are these piston squirters?

So, these adjustable spoilers were only used in early S4's? My VIN is WP0JB0923H3860526.

My VIN isWPOJB0923HS861143. As 1143 is later than 0526 you should have both. There are photos on Rennlist of the piston squirters, just do a search. Sometimes the hinges broke and the wing replaced with a fixed wing.

I tried adjusting my wing. I would like the trailing edge higher.

Adjusting the blocks just caused the wing to rattle as it did not lock down tightly.

Is there more to adjusting it than just moving the blocks?

Thanks.

OK, thanks. I knew about engines that squirted oil on the bottoms of the pistons to cool them off a bit (my 82 Saab Turbo did this). I was thrown off since we're talking about the other end of the car, and the possibility of Porsche designers doing something bizarre, like an servoelectrohydraulic rear window washing system, or hatch release cooling system.

In any case, it appears my car will have cool pistons, but I should beware the extra oil aeration at high RPM. I might as well dial in more downforce on my adjustable spoiler, right?

The adjustment is for locking mechanism, not the angle. Here is the detail from the '87 service info (from the Jim Morehouse CD's):
