Default H4 restoration

I have acquired an 8" H4 and the inside is a bit shoddy.
Is there a way to remove the lens and re coat or re silver the cup part of the light?

Not sure there is enough room to buff and polish.
I would therefore try a silversmith to re-chrome using a plating process.

While helping a friend restore an old barn find Pantera L we came across a few places. Many are listed in any of the monthly Hemmings Motor News magazines. One such place that is a fav with the resto guys is Steve's Auto Restorations in Portland, Oregon www.stevesautorestorations.com (no affliation).

Recent recommendations included a little non-ammonia window cleaner, and a distilled-water rinse. Better reflectors are silvered, average ones are aluminum. Use appropriate cation. Use nothing abrasive, cuz the coating is microns thick.

This is accomplished by going thru the bulb hole? There isn't a way to remove the glass lens?

For H5's I put them on the oven at 150 for 20 minutes and the lens comes right off. I tried that with some H4's and had no luck at all. Didn't feel like upping the temperature to see how high it could go before other things started to melt.

Can't imagine that they used a different sealant but who knows.

You can still buy new H4's, right?

How difficult was it to re seal them? I have H5's now and they just don't throw out enough light. I found a used H4 on Flea Bay but it needs a bit of help. Now I'm looking for another one. The 50/100w bulbs work great in the 7 inch H4's

Seriously - try Vodka to remove the fogginess.

At least if it doesn't work you can drink the vodka to console yourself.

All these tips are useful as I have some fogging on my headlights. I have a spare pair if I bugger something up trying to improve one.

Yes, but they are a little dear.. $355 list, $258 from Sonnen, $200 used from 928 Int'l with the holiday sale coming up (if available). I've got one bought used with a corroded reflector if anyone wants to try to save it or swap the glass onto a decent reflector, $75 plus shipping.

Thanks Jim for reply and the pricing!

And that's one of my issues w/ used lights up-front, either the glass is dulled/pitted from road sand blasting or they took on water and the reflector is shot.
If you want a "clean" look IMO, best to buy new and or known used

So could a person, if they were so inclined, put a replacement H4 lens onto a H5 body? My understanding is that the H4 lens is what "makes" it a good headlamp. Would anything be accomplished by doing this?
