Default Oil in Coolant

Checking the fluids today, I noticed my coolant cap had some oil on it. Looking in the tank, there is some oil in there as well. It is not much, just a thing film, but it is there. Looked at the dip stick, and it is good. I pulled the hose to the thermostat, and i did not see a residue there.

I am scheduled to bring the car in for winter maintenance, and going to replace the motor mounts and oil pan gasket so I guess I have another project on th list.

Do I have to replace the radiator, or is there a repair. I will test compression to make sure the head gasket is good, but the engine is really performing well.

Any options to put in a satellite oil and trans cooler, and get the oil away from the radiator??

thanks

Your cooler in the radiator end tanks is leaking. Tanks the radiator to a competent radiator shop and see if they can fix it or see if a tank is available.

Thanks. Luckily the car is scheduled for my long awaited motor mount replacement.

Also how do I clean this stuff out. I read about using about 4 table spoons of dawn.

Finally will the rad shops do anything with our plastic capped radiators. In the past, most would tell me there was nothing they could on the plastic side of things. at least that was for my BMW.

Given the work to access the cooler, do a repair...and then the roll of the dice of whether they get it right, or not...sprinigng for one of 928Intl's replacements might make sense.

I think you are right, could be about 300 down the drain. I do need to get it pressure tested though to make sure this is where the breakdown is.

Don't use dawn - it foams.

Use dishwasher powder - its non-foaming and will get all the grease out in short order. Then just drain the system (using the block plugs too), flush the system with water a couple of times (again using drain plugs), and done.

I had about an inch of oil in my coolant reservoir after failure of the end tank (I bought the car like that), and no sign of oil film since a good clean and replace radiator.

thanks Hilton, ran it through with Dish washer powder, seemed to do well. I think I caught this issue early, drained the coolest, not too oily or milky, and thankfully, the engine oil showed no signs of water. I have to crack the block bolts, I found them near the rear of the engine. going to pull the radiator in a couple of weeks or so.
